How did Alex allegedly die in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place?

Fans were left in shock when Alex Russo's fate took a darker turn in the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Season 2 finale. Alex bravely gave her life to save the world and her daughter, Billie, after a magical fight.

Alex makes the final decision when the evil wizard Lord Morsus sets up a deadly rift between their world and the world of dark magic. She took hold of Morsus and slipped with him into the portal, which shut behind them and completely divided their world from the dark dimension. Since there was no other way to close the gap, this act of generosity had to be planned.

Alex's fall into a parallel universe feels like a "goodbye, for now," though the show never actually says that she is dead. Since she wants to protect her daughter from the evil that lives within their own family, the memories that were earlier erased make the cost even higher. There is a tentative sense of relief for Wizards Beyond Waverly Place fans: Alex Russo appears to be alive. Well, it doesn't look like a permanent goodbye, anyway. The portal shuts behind them as Alex surrenders. Though this seems like a death sentence, the show leaves her fate hanging.

As a classic example of the "trapped but alive" trope in science fiction and fantasy literature, Alex is right now imprisoned in a parallel dark dimension. Also, the hopeful final scene of the finale (in which Billie and the Russos promise to bring her back) shows that her story is far from over.

There's a good reason why Wizards Beyond Waverly Place fans are looking forward to Season 3. Even though the show hasn't been officially renewed yet, executive producer and Justin Russo actor David Henrie has teased that the upcoming chapter will deal with identity, belonging, and legacy. All of these have a connection to the cliffhanger from the Season 2 finale. The search for Alex should be the primary focus of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Season 3.
