The enigmatic word "Wajo" was first heard in Invasion Season 1 Episode 3 Orion. This was when the show was still building on its alien reveal and Mitsuki Yamato was making sense of the recent death of her secret girlfriend, Captain Hinata Murai.

Since Hinata had tragically died in space while on a three-person mission to the ISS, Mitsuki had drowned herself in alcohol. However, in Orion, Mitsuki decides to deep dive into the mysterious events that led to her late girlfriend's and her crew's demise.

'Wajo' was the last word uttered by Hinata before she was tragically pulled into Outer Space. 'Wajo' is a Japanese word meaning 'castle' and signifies the magnificent size of the alien mothership and the large-scale alien attack about to hit humanity in Invasion.

More on this in our story.

Exploring the initial meaning behind Wajo in Invasion Season 1

After Mitsuki was continuously plagued by Hinata's visions in Invasion, she broke into JASA's confidential records with her trusted technician, Kaito Kawaguchi. She wanted to know what happened on that fateful spaceship and how Hinata's space mission went haywire at the last moment.

The secret footage was not only home to Hinata's final moments as she was brutally sucked into space but also the bone-chilling arrival of the extraterrestrial creatures on Earth. The footage revealed that before Hinata was sent into space oblivion, something crashed into her spaceship, and she uttered the word 'Wajo'. While Mitsuki was devastated after seeing her girlfriend die in the footage, Invasion fans were speculating on the meaning of Wajo.

Wajo literally translates to 'castle' in Japanese. The word is used to describe traditional and gigantic castles in previous centuries. Since it is unlikely that Hinata's spaceship was hit by a Japanese castle in outer space, her word could signify a castle-like big threat approaching Earth. We know now that Hinta's Wajo word in Invasion was likely a warning for the gargantuan alien mothership that eventually landed on Earth, but its meaning was unclear back then.

Additionally, Hinata's unusual choice of word ie Wajo is also symbolic of the unusual nature of this threat, which was so strange that the dying Captain could not even explain it properly.

Invasion Season 2 evolved the meaning of Wajo

If you thought that Wajo was a one-time thing in the Invasion universe, you are wrong, as the word popped up again in Season 2 Episode 5. While fans speculated that Hinata's Wajo signified something large and impenetrable, like the alien attack, Episode 5 hinted that it might have a deeper meaning than Season 1 had us believe.

After Trevante and Rose got their hands on Casper's drawings, they were taken to Martin, who kept repeating the word Wajo. Additionally, Aneesha's son Luke also repeated this mysterious word. Since both Martin and Luke were under aliens' control, it was hinted that Wajo could be a word used by aliens to contact humans.

Since Japanese is an intricate language, the word "Wajo" can also have an alternative meaning if we break the words "Wa" (meaning peace) and "jo/jou" (meaning emotion). This suggests that aliens are likely suggesting some kind of peace or harmony with humans, with their mind-control hive. This evolved meaning of Wajo in Invasion is even more dangerous, as it suggests that the aliens want humans to disconnect from the external world and surrender their minds to the creatures and reconnect with their true essence in the process.

The Apple TV+ series is yet to give a confirmed meaning to Wajo, but it hints at the aliens' ultimate goal: to make humans surrender themselves and build an 'emotional harmony' with the creatures.
