I was today years old when I learnt these Supernatural and Smallville stars share a comedy classic (but the CW crossover never happened)

Both Smallville and Supernatural are two shows that drew a massive number of eyeballs on CW, even back when it was WB. While Smallville portrayed the life and struggles of a young Clark Kent, played admirably by Tom Welling, Supernatural followed the two brothers Sam Winchester and Dean, played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, respectively. The duo embarked on paranormal adventures, as suggested by the name of the show, and had a very successful long run on the network.

Like many others, I too had been rooting for the idea of a crossover episode between Smallville and Supernatural. However, little did I know that both Welling and Padalecki appeared together in a comedy film by the name of Cheaper by the Dozen, which was released back in 2003.

Cheaper by the Dozen featured both the Supernatural and Smallville stars in a scene together

The film starred Steve Martin in the leading role of football coach Tom Baker, who relocates to Illinois after taking up a new job position. While this may sound like a routine affair, the relocation soon ends up becoming chaotic, especially since Tom is father to twelve children, and all of them were dead set against accompanying him to Illinois. Tom Welling appeared in the film as Tom Baker's second eldest son, called Charlie. Baker's wife, on the other hand, takes to writing a book about their family, and the oldest daughter, Nora, is relegated to being the primary caregiver of the family.

Welling and Padalecki crossed paths in a scene where Charlie is being bullied by another boy from school, played by Padalecki. The bully teases Charlie on account of being a 'hick,' and this quickly spirals into Charlie resisting him physically until the fight is broken up by Charlie's sister Lorraine's intervention. Supernatural star Padalecki has shed some light on his appearance on Cheaper by the Dozen back in 2008 while speaking on The Bonnie Hunt Show, wherein he revealed:

"Shawn Levy called me and was like, 'Hey, Tom's a big guy, he said he wants to be picked on by a big guy...you wanna come by and have fun?' I was a big jerk."

Tom Welling speaks about Supernatural and more

Marking the twentieth anniversary of Smallville, star Tom Welling sat down with TVLine for an exclusive interview, during the course of which he shared his insights about the success of Supernatural. When asked if he ever anticipated that Supernatural would go on to such heights of success, Welling answered:

"You know what, I did — probably more than I did about Smallville, to be honest. Because with Smallville, I was in it. I was trying to tread water every minute, every day, trying to keep it going. Nobody tells you that you’re going to be successful, even when you are successful. No one tells you that you’re going to be there for a long period of time, but knowing Jared (Padalecki) and Jensen (Ackles) and then watching Supernatural, from the outset I could see where the two of them made that show. And there was a point in that show where they started separating, and I was like, “You guys, the show is you guys together.” Like, that’s what it is."

Smallville is available on Hulu.
