Season 2 of Tell Me Lies finally answers the question on viewers' minds for quite some time now: How did Drew die? Although Drew and Wrigley were estranged for most of the 2008 college scenes in season 2, it is revealed in the final episode that Drew died that same year.
Drew died of an overdose of painkillers in Tell Me Lies. After a night of fighting with his brother, Wrigley finds Drew unconscious and vomiting. He tries to wake him up and calls an ambulance. Wrigley also blames himself for his brother's death when he says,
“I’m the one who gave him the pills and I’m the one who ruined his life.”
Revisiting the scene to understand how Drew died in Tell Me Lies
One of the big mysteries surrounding Hulu's Tell Me Lies revolves around Wrigley's brother, Drew, an extremely disturbed character throughout the series. He was also revealed to be an accomplice in Macy's death in the first season but is unaware of his role in it.
The key person involved was Wrigley's best friend Stephen DeMarco. However, the secret has been a major source of pain for Drew, and as more people discover it, the situation becomes more complex.
In the future timeline of Tell Me Lies, set in 2015, something devastating happens to Drew. Anyone who needs a quick recap of what happened should know that Lucy and Stephen broke up, Wrigley also broke up with Pippa, while Drew fought with Wrigley. Wrigley then fell off the balcony and had to stop playing football, badly injured. This event would later come back to haunt Drew.
In episode 8 of Tell Me Lies, after not appearing for almost the whole season, Drew returns to campus to make amends with Wrigley. They make up and end up at a party for the night, which they spend drinking and popping pills. When Wrigley wakes up in the morning, he finds Drew on the couch, unresponsive. Wrigley tries to wake him up, but to his shock, finds Drew dead.
Why does Wrigley blame himself for Drew’s death?
The audience already knew that Drew was not well from the way Wrigley spoke in 2015. But it was not until the season two finale that we learned what he had been through. Earlier, Wrigley and Drew had fallen out when Drew learned that Wrigley had told his girlfriend Pippa about the night Macy died and how Drew had run away.
Stephen had also informed Lucy, who then sent a letter to the Dean's office asking them to investigate the case. Though nothing came of it, it affected Drew immensely.
By the second season, Drew and Wrigley were no longer on speaking terms. Wrigley was having a terrible time adjusting to his brother and the injury to his football career. He was trying to put his life back together, but not much seemed to be going well until they agreed to get together.
Drew and Wrigley had a good reunion at first. They decided to catch up over a drink, and for a while, everything seemed fine. But then something went wrong. Wrigley made a big mistake.
He was taking some painkillers for his knee injury and brought some with him. He and his brother decided to take the pills that night but it seems like Drew had too much of it. The next morning, Wrigley woke up, but Drew didn't.
We also hear him accepting him being a cause of his brother’s death, as he says;
“He was splitting in half, but they were time-release and he can’t do that with a time-release pill. That can kill you,”
Drew’s death has left a lasting impact on Wrigley, Maybe season 3 of Tell Me Lies will continue this storyline in the next chapter.
