As Andor Season 2 is slowly building up to the events of Star Wars: Rogue One, we are gradually getting more insight into the inner workings of the Rebellion. It tells the story of how the Rebellion started, before the fall of the Galactic Empire. The show follows Cassian Andor, a spy and assassin who slowly becomes one of the most important people in the fight against the Empire.

In most Star Wars shows and movies, joining the Rebellion looks exciting. You fly ships, fight stormtroopers, and stand up to Darth Vader. But Andor shows a different side. It shows that being a rebel is hard, scary, and full of sacrifices. This was explained in detail bythen Rael (played by Stellan Skarsgård) in Andor Season 1, and a scene in Andor Season 2 acts as a sequel to that.

Luthen Rael follows up on his Season One monologue in Andor Season 2

One of the most appreciated scenes from Season one of Andor took place in episode ten, One Way Out. Luthen, an integral member of the Rebellion, explains the hardships of committing to The Cause to a rebel spy, Lonni Jung. This scene is beautifully followed up in another scene in Andor Season 2.

Lonni no longer wishes to be a spy and informs Luthen about a raid to be carried out by the Empire. He also mentions how fifty men would lose their lives if Luthen does not intervene. Luthen decides not to intervene as it will expose Jung as a spy and says that sacrifices need to be made for the greater good. He also insists on how important Jung is to the cause. Jung, in turn, questions him.

"What do you sacrifice?"

Luthen’s response is a full-blown monologue that establishes how dedicated Luthen is and foreshadows the level of commitment he expects of anyone who joins the rebellion. He says,

"Calm, kindness, kinship, love. I've given up all chance at inner-peace, I made my mind a sunless space. I share my dreams with ghosts. I wake up everyday to an equation I wrote 15 years ago for which there is only one conclusion: I'm damned for what I do, my anger, my ego, my unwillingness to yield, my eagerness to fight. It's set me on a path from which there is no escape. I yearn to be a savior against injustice without contemplating the cost. And by the time I look down, there's no longer any ground beneath my feet. What is my sacrifice?"

He continues,

"I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them. I burn my decency for someone else's future. I burn my life to make a sunrise I know I'll never see. The ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude. So what do I sacrifice? EVERYTHING!"

In Andor Season 2, a scene connects directly to that moment. In episode six, What a Festive Evening, Cassian Andor confronts Luthen. Cassian is not happy with how Luthen has tested Bix’s commitment and capability to take on a mission. This is not only because Bix has a drug addiction and struggles mentally, and Cassian cares about her, but also because he is furious at how obsessive Luthen is about The Cause.

Cassian’s confrontation leads to an exchange of strong dialogue between him and Luthen, and Luthen finally says,

"Kill me or take me in"

This scene in Andor Season 2 is a perfect follow-up to Luthen’s first speech. While it is no monologue, the exchange shows that Luthen still believes in the same hard truth. Andor Season 2 shows how the Rebellion needs people who are willing to lose everything. It also shows that Cassian is still learning what it really means to be part of the Rebellion and that it can cost him everything, including his life.

Andor Season 2 continues to portray the same message from season one that freedom isn’t easy. It takes strength, courage, and real sacrifice. Luthen definitely isn't a 'good' character just because he is part of the Rebellion. But his actions are calculated and for the greater good. Through Luthen, Andor Season 2 proves that the Rebellion was not built on hope alone; it was built by people who were willing to give up everything for it.

The last six episodes of Andor Season 2 will be released three at a time over the next two Tuesdays, 6th and 13th May, at 9 pm ET/6 pm PT on Disney+. All episodes of Andor Season 1 and all released episodes of Andor Season 2 are available for streaming on Disney+.
