His & Hers opens Episode 2 with Jack yelling for screwing things up for himself. Well, that honestly makes us wonder how good of a detective he is. The tension is palpable. And this Netflix psychological thriller is clearly not interested in giving us easy answers. But isn't that part of the fun always?
The show is about Anna who's a journalist and Jack who's a detective. They are a married couple separated by grief and betrayal. And now a murder has dragged them back into each other’s lives. His & Hers is a crime mystery that also focuses on personal relationships.
In His & Hers, the themes of power, cruelty, memory, and control run parallel to the murder investigation. Old rotten friendships are shown. Teenage trauma haunts adult lives. Episode 2 leans into all this messiness and gives us an insider look at why no one in this town is really clean. It is a slow whodunit. And this episode makes it very clear.
His & Hers Episode 2 recap: Secrets are spilled
In His & Hers Episode 2, Anna is seen scrolling through her friends' photos online. It looks like she is trying to poke at a bruise. A photo of Meg with Jack pops up. And right on cue, Jack storms in. He is furious and hurt. He calls Anna out for naming Rachel publicly and accuses her of blowing things up for her own story. Their argument is ugly. Jack asks if things would have been different if he'd waited for her. She doesn't know. Well, that doesn't help. So, they agree to 'coexist' and go on their own ways.
At the morgue, Dr. Turner presents a bracelet found inside the mouth of the victim in His & Hers Episode 2. Jack immediately recognizes it as a friendship bracelet as Zoe (his sister) also had one. Then Turner asks Jack and Priya for a DNA swab as part of the procedure. Jack dodges it. And that makes us wonder if he is really innocent.
Jack and Priya finally get to speak to Rachel’s husband. Duffie Hopkins is open and admits to being impotent. He describes their open marriage in detail. He says that Rachel enjoyed humiliating her partners. That was one of the ways she derived pleasure. He suggests that her current boyfriend might have snapped. Priya seems willing to entertain that theory, which irritates Jack more than it should. They check Duffie’s CCTV footage and see Rachel talking to somebody over the phone when she's leaving the house for the last time. Duffie steps out soon after to walk his dog in the rain.
Before the detectives leave, Duffie reveals that Anna visited him earlier and mentioned Helen as someone who might know about the boyfriend. Jack’s frustration spikes, and Helen becomes unreachable.
Jack makes a disturbing discovery back at the car in His & Hers Episode 2. Rachel’s phone is in his vehicle. Duffie has been repeatedly calling it to drain the battery, despite being told not to do so. We learn that he is in cahoots with Helen. Priya wants to believe the boyfriend theory. She thinks the stabbing was meant to confuse investigators and that Rachel’s fingernails were taken to hide DNA. Jack snaps and admits that he knows Helen.
Anna heads to St Hilary’s in His & Hers Episode 2. It's the private girls’ school where they all studied together. A flashback shows her teenage self arriving on scholarship. Her mother (Alice) used to work as a cleaner for Rachel's family. She asks her to look out for her daughter. Rachel, Zoe, and Helen laugh at her amongst themselves. The present-day meeting between Anna and Helen is venomous. Helen calls Anna "a parasitic stirrer of sh*t". She refuses to go on record about Jack and Rachel’s affair. She taunts her by bringing up her dead child. And oh, there is also a 20-year-old secret between them.
Jack, on the other hand, cancels the trace on Rachel’s phone and tries to unlock it. He goes home to collect Zoe’s DNA swab but she's not home. He takes Meg’s swab instead. Anna watches with tears in her eyes from outside. Another flashback shows a younger Jack and a pregnant Anna celebrating buying a house.
Alice cooks Anna some scrambled eggs when she gets home. But there's eggshells on them. Anna realizes how ill her mother actually is. Then she gets a call that Lexy is missing. Jim wants Anna to anchor the evening news. She agrees and leaves her mother alone once again in His & Hers Episode 2.
Jack goes to submit his DNA sample, which is actually his niece's. He pretends to have lost his wedding ring so that he can find Rachel's body and try to unlock her phone. He manages to do so. He deletes their messages and stumbles onto texts between Rachel and Helen about blackmail. Someone identified as ‘C’ was demanding money. Helen wanted out, but Rachel said it was too late. Helen texts if Rachel dumped Jack, which means Helen knows about the affair. Jack is shaken towards the end of His & Hers Episode 2.
Meanwhile, Priya finds a boot print at the crime scene that actually matches Jack’s. She just doesn't know it yet. Finally, we see Helen calling the precinct and asking for Sheriff Barnes.
His & Hers ends Episode 2 with several questions and even more secrets to be uncovered.
