Fans of Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are buzzing since the news of a crossover between the two shows in Abbott Elementary’s upcoming Season 4.

It’s exciting for a bunch of reasons. For starters, these two hit comedies air on different networks, Abbott Elementary is on ABC, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is an FX show. Such a crossover is rare, to say the least.

Not to mention, they’re quite different in tone. Abbott Elementary is known for its wholesome, PG-rated humor. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is known for its edgy and dark comedy.

Previously on social media, Rob McElhenney, Sunny’s co-creator, had teased that since both the shows air under the umbrella of Disney (FX and ABC) and are both set in Philadelphia, the crossover makes so much sense.

Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, the executive producers, have spilled some more beans. They told Variety that viewers will see the entire It’s Always Sunny gang in the ninth episode of Abbott Elementary’s season 4.

Now, let’s look at what fans might expect from this crossover.

1) Abbott Elementary needs a bit of darkness from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Fans are mostly expecting humorous character interactions and iconic gags in the crossover. However, Abbott Elementary could do with a touch of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s dark humor.

The heartwarming, feel-good moments of Abbott Elementary, combined with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia chaos can make for a wild viewing experience.

One fan on X captured the excitement perfectly, saying:

“I actually am so excited to see Dennis interact with ANYONE from Abbott 😭🤣”

Another one wrote,

“It’s hard to believe anything takes place in the same universe as Always Sunny, let alone something as normal as Abbott”

While a fan wrote,

“Abbott Elementary meets Paddy’s Pub... what could go wrong? Literally everything. lol”

2) Fans need Principal Ava and Frank Reynolds to meet

Let’s be real, Abbott Elementary’s Principal Ava and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Frank Reynolds are destined to meet. They are meant to cross paths. Both are unapologetically bold.

Ava is originally introduced as a scammer and Frank is way more unhinged. But they both act like they’re the voice of reason in their worlds. It’s another thing that they’re two of the most irresponsible, self-absorbed people on their shows.

Ava and Frank share a certain meanness. They are always willing to throw their friends and coworkers under the bus to get what they want. So, an interaction between these two characters can make for an interesting watch in the crossover episode.

3) Fans need Mr. Johnson and Charlie to cross paths

It’s no secret that Abbott Elementary’s Mr. Johnson has become a fan favorite. He’s unpredictable, extremely funny, and somehow always in the middle of things even though he is the school’s custodian.

He’s a lot like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Charlie, who’s also spent years doing all the dirty work for the gang at Paddy’s Pub.

But while Charlie is a sweet and gullible person, Mr. Johnson is more on the quirkier side, and of course, self-sufficient. What they share in common is their ability to somehow deal with all the gross, thankless jobs that no one else wants.

Hence, watching Mr. Johnson and Charlie competing (or teaming up) could be one of the best parts of the crossover.

4) Abbott Elementary needs to get caught in one of the Sunny gang’s schemes

Is it even a crossover without the gang trying to pull off one of their classic scams? Maybe, even targeting Abbott Elementary! The gang is known for its shady and illegal schemes, and it would be more than exciting for them to try and take advantage of an underfunded school like Abbott Elementary.

With some of the ABC show's characters making some reckless decisions, it seems like a perfect opportunity for Frank, Dee, Mac, Charlie, and Dennis to come up with a harebrained plan to make a profit out of the school.

5) Mr. Johnson and Frank should have an old connection

One of the funniest things that might come out of the crossover could be Mr. Johnson and Frank Reynolds meeting each other.

They are both known for their wild stories and strange claims. Well, even though somehow, many of them turn out to be true, despite sounding ridiculous. It would be fun if they showed that these two characters had some sort of history, maybe they were old friends or enemies, for that matter.

And to be honest, their meeting would make the most sense in the crossover.
