When Boston Blue premiered on CBS last month, fans were surprised to find out that Mika Amonsen was playing the role of Sean Reagan. The surprise came from the fact that Andrew Terraciano originally portrayed the character in Blue Bloods.
While audiences scratched their heads over why the creators recast the character, Mika Amonsen has gradually made his place in the viewers’ hearts with his own version of Sean Reagan.
The actor has now talked about how he felt replacing Andrew Terraciano in Boston Blue. In an interview with US Weekly, Amonsen said that he felt a lot of pressure while playing the character. At the same time, he also tried to honor Andrew in his own way:
“I definitely felt a ton of pressure at first. I felt the pressure to respect an actor before me because I wanted to respect Andrew the best I could. There were even certain visual choices that I made that I wanted to keep in terms of hair styling and certain ways of being [as Sean].”

Mika Amonsen added that he has tried to create his own version of Sean in Boston Blue. As he also wanted to respect Andrew’s legacy, he sought the showrunners’ help in finding the perfect balance:
“I wanted to respect Andrew’s portrayal of Sean as much as I could - but also adding something to my own version. The show runners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis have been really good at giving me a lot of freedom to explore that new dynamic with Donnie.”
The actor further talked about the criticism he has faced from the audience. Viewers were used to watching Andrew in the role of Sean in Blue Bloods for 14 years, so it was difficult for them to accept a new face. Mika acknowledged that he is aware of some negative feedback, but is more focused on the positive comments he has been receiving from fans:
“There’s been some negativity, for sure. But when I look under those posts that have the negativity, there’s a lot of fans rallying for Sean and people saying that they really enjoyed this character that I’ve created, or my version of character. They’re really enjoying the show and they love where it’s going in terms of Sean and that makes me happy.”
In an earlier interview, showrunner Brandon Margolis revealed that the team decided to recast Sean in Boston Blue as they wanted a ‘new performance with a new energy’ that could explore the character’s new story dynamics following the conclusion of Blue Bloods.
Even though Sean has been recast, it does not mean that the spin-off has a dearth of nostalgia for the fans of the OG series. The procedural drama brings back Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan. Marisa Ramirez and Bridget Moynahan also make guest appearances in the show as Erin Reagan and Maria Baez, respectively.
The series regulars include Sonequa Martin-Green as Lena Silver, Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, Ernie Hudson as Edwin Peters, and Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver.
Boston Blue airs new episodes on CBS on Fridays.
