Video game lovers rejoice as FX has given a series order to Ubisoft's Far Cry, a popular video game anthology franchise of first-person shooter games. The series will be created by Noah Hawley (Alien: Earth) and Rob MacElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), with MacElhenney set to star in the first season. The show will be available on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ internationally.
Since there are minimal shared narratives and chronology elements between the different Far Cry games, each new season of the anthology series will feature a different standalone story, retaining the action-adventure feel of the game. Each new season of Hawley and Mac's series will follow a new story, along with a different cast and set of characters.

Noah Hawley and Rob MacElhenney to develop Far Cry series
Noah Hawley's partnership with FX dates back to 2014 with his anthology black comedy crime series Fargo, which saw monumental success and won seven Emmy Awards. Their teamwork led to Alien: Earth, which resulted in a second season renewal and an extended collaboration.
In a statement to Deadline, Noah Hawley expressed his excitement about this next FX project:
“What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme...To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.”
Rob Mac added:
“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized. Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”
Mac, who had a cameo in Hawley's Fargo, is also the creator and star of Apple TV+'s comedy series Mythic Quest, based on a fictional video game studio. Hawley and Mac's combined talent will surely uplift Far Cry and make it a must-watch title, like all their other works.
More about the Far Cry video game franchise
The franchise is one of Ubisoft's most popular video games, enjoyed by 100 million unique players since 2004. In addition to six main installments, the game has also launched five spin-offs.
The action-adventure series is known for its single-player campaign, an open-world style of gameplay and memorable antagonists.
Each new season of Far Cry takes the player into a new lawless and wilderness environment and they must survive from the region's many dictators, wild animals, weather conditions and roam the open spaces, while completing different side missions and optional quests. The principal developers believe all the games share the same fictional universe, a continuity they have tried to maintain by retaining some minor characters across all installments. The stories range from supernatural, sci-fi to realistic.
The most recent installment, Far Cry 6, introduced the fascist dictator Antón Castillo, portrayed by actor Giancarlo Esposito. The seventh installment is set to release in 2026.
