The acclaimed animated sitcom Family Guy premiered in 1999 and has since been considered one of the best animated sitcoms, along with The Simpsons and others. As the series became popular, so did the voice actors such as Seth MacFarlane (the creator of the show), Alex Borstein, and Mila Kunis, who portray the beloved characters and have become synonymous with their roles after voicing these characters for more than two decades.
While most of the voice actors have been voicing their iconic characters since Season 1, Mila Kunis is the only cast member who joined in Season 2 of Family Guy. Before Kunis joined and made Meg Griffin, the eldest child of the Griffin family, her own character, it was actress Lacey Chabert who introduced Meg in Season 1.
However, she had to quit in Season 2 due to conflicts in time management for her school and her work, as she was also working on the teen drama, Party of Five. Mila Kunis then joined the show and has been voicing the character since then.
More on this in our story.
Family Guy: Lacey Chabert introduced Meg Griffin in Season 1 before Mila Kunis joined
Family Guy revolves around the dysfunctional Griffin family and their lives in Quahog, a fictional city situated in Rhode Island. The animated series has run 23 seasons and is set to return with season 24 in 2026.
It is one of the most renowned shows, which, through its signature humor and quirky narrative, also sarcastically presents American culture and has become a cult classic series. Along with the storytelling and humor, the voice actors have also gained prominence and are now synonymous with the characters they voice.
While Mila Kunis, who exclusively voices Meg Griffin, the eldest child of the Griffins and a socially awkward teenager, is known as the voice of Meg now, she wasn't the one who introduced the character in 1999 when the show premiered. It was American actress Lacey Chabert who first voiced Meg Griffin in Family Guy Season 1. Chabert is also known for playing Claudia Salinger in the popular family and teen drama, Party of Five.
However, she could not continue to voice Meg in Family Guy after Season 1 due to time conflicts and not being able to balance school and her work commitments. During an interview with IGN in 2003, creator Seth MacFarlane shared that the recasting happened due to a "contractual thing" and stated:
"It was just purely a contractual thing. Lacey Chabert, I think there was a mistake in her contract, and I guess she had not intended to be involved for, like, the full run of the show. I don't even remember. To be honest, I don't really, to this day, know what it was. It was nothing - there was no tension or anything."
While Mila Kunis impressed MacFarlane with her audition and grabbed the role which she has been playing since Season 2 of the animated sitcom, Lacey is also still remembered, and her voice was part of the show in a Season 10 episode titled, Back to the Pilot. In the episode, Brian and Stewie traveled back in time in the show's pilot episode, which played Lacey's voice as Meg's, for which Stewie even commented on the voice change.
