Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw bid farewell to her longtime fans in the And Just Like That Season 3 finale titled Party of One, which premiered on HBO Max on August 14, 2025. Carrie, one of the most iconic female characters on the small screen, started her journey in Sex and the City in 1998.
After a series of romances, tragedies, heartbreaks, and friendships, showrunner Michael Patrick King and Parker decided that it was time to halt Carrie and the other characters' story with the Season 3 finale. Explaining their decision to The New York Times, Parker said:
“We could have gone on doing coffee shops. There’s a million ways to do it that are easy and familiar and fun, but feel exploitative to us. We felt this was the honorable thing to do. It’s very easy to stay. It’s where we’re all happy. But you have to be principled when you make these very difficult, agonizing decisions because there’s a lot of people who are affected.''
While Carrie's journey ended in And Just Like That, where she finally accepted her singlehood and embraced it wholeheartedly, one of the show's EPs has teased the character's potential return.
More on this in our story.
And Just Like That EP teased Carrie Bradshaw's return
While Parker's Carrie Bradshaw bid goodbye to her fans with the And Just Like That Season 3 finale, executive producer Elisa Zuritsky is 'optimistic' that the iconic character can still return to the small screen, on showrunner King's behest. In an interview with TV Line, Zuritsky teased Carrie's return as:
“Sarah Jessica Parker is Michael Patrick King’s muse and the reason he says ‘I’ve said goodbye before and I’ve come back’ is because it’s true...We serve at his pleasure.”
Zuritsky added that she is hopeful that Carrie Bradshaw would return and that her journey in And Just Like That was not final. She even revealed that she keeps notes and storylines about Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte's lives handy in her phone and computer (just in case):
“I am the eternal optimist. So I don’t like to be too final about things, and life is long. I mean, we’ve all seen lots of things happen.''
Back in 2004, when Sex and the City came to an end after an iconic run of six seasons, EP Julie Rottenberg also revealed how the writers would continue to develop ideas for the characters and the stories. While it took the writers and King almost fifteen years to bring Carrie and the gang back in And Just Like That, the return was equally iconic, and the fans cherished Carrie's (short) return.
While King and Parker have confirmed that Carrie's story has ended with Season 3 of the spin-off series, Elisa Zuritsky's comments suggest that the iconic character can still return to the small screen in another revival one day.
Carrie Bradshaw chose herself in the And Just Like That series finale
Throughout the And Just Like That series finale, Carrie fiddled with the ideas of romance and loneliness. With Thanksgiving nearing and all her other friends contemplating marriage and divorces in their lives, Carrie was forced to question her breakup with Aidan. Romance and relationships had always been such a big part of her life that she had somehow forgotten how to be alone.
While longtime Carrie fans wanted her to have a traditional happy ending and end up with Aidan or spark a romantic connection with a new suitor, the series finale gave her an unconventional ending, where she had a quiet realization and embraced her singlehood, maybe for the first time.
The final moments of And Just Like That saw Carrie in her apartment, firing up the karaoke machine and eating the Thanksgiving pie alone. The ending was certainly a little unexpected and surprising for Sex and the City fans, but it also symbolized growth and maturity for the protagonist.
