It is well known that Daredevil: Born Again is a continuation of the Netflix series, Daredevil, that had three seasons on the streaming platform. The fan-favorite and critically acclaimed series followed the attempts of lawyer-by-day and vigilante-by-night Matt Murdock trying to bring down the criminal empire of Wilson Fisk/ Kingpin. The series featured Charlie Cox as The Man Without Fear and Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk.
Season 3 of Netflix's Daredevil is set right after the events of The Defenders and follows Matt on a recovery journey from the injuries he sustained in the team-up series. However, Wilson Fisk's return forces Matt to suit up as The Devil of Hell's Kitchen, to put an end to the villain's reign once and for all. Showrunner for the acclaimed season was Erik Oleson, who was working on a fourth season before the series was abruptly canceled.
On April 1, 2025, Oleson sat down for an interview with TheWrap, where the writer revealed his plans for the fourth and fifth seasons. He revealed that Matt Murdock would've fought Typhoid Mary in the fourth season, and Wilson Bethel would've returned as Benjamin Poindexter/Bullseye in the fifth season.
However, Netflix canceled Daredevil the series roughly a month after the Season 3 premiere.
What do Daredevil Season 3 showrunner Erik Oleson's comments mean?
Daredevil Season 3 ends on an uneasy alliance between Wilson Fisk and Matt. Matt beats Fisk to within an inch of his life but doesn't kill him like he initially intended in the Season 3 finale. Matt even threatens Fisk by saying he'll out Vanessa as the one who ordered the assassination of an FBI agent in an earlier episode. Fisk promises he'll stop trying to kill Foggy and Karen in return for Matt's silence.
The closing moments of the third season see Benjamin Poindexter undergoing a procedure to fix his broken spine (Fisk broke it). The scene hinted that the series was going to continue for more than one or two seasons. However, a rights issue between Netflix and Disney proved to be the roadblock. Thus, Netflix canceled the series when Erik Oleson was planning out seasons 4 and 5.
Therefore, the Season 3 showrunner expressed happiness on the return of the series on Disney+, although he had been surprised in 2018 when the popular Netflix Marvel series was canceled. He said:
“I’m very excited that the show came back at a different network. It’s so weird. As a showrunner, you’re kind of prepared for your show to be canceled. You’re not necessarily prepared for your studio [to be canceled]. It was a very bizarre thing.”
The writer then spoke of what his original plan for Daredevil Seasons 3 and 4 were:
“The Season 4 I had planned was quite different. It was a Typhoid Mary story. It was going to go into a different direction. And then I was going to circle back to the Bullseye storyline in Season 5. I was starting to plan out future seasons and what we would do, kind of a long arc. And then, of course, Netflix and Marvel broke up because Disney+ wanted Marvel.”
The Netflix Marvel Universe would have adapted the characters of Bullseye and Typhoid Mary but the show was canceled. While Bullseye was introduced as Benjamin Poindexter in Daredevil Season 3, we meet Typhoid Mary/Mary Walker, played by actress Alice Eve in Iron Fist Season 2. However, as Marvel is planning multiple seasons of Born Again, probably, she can probably fight the Man Without Fear in an upcoming season.
