Lily Collins' Emily has always had a messy life and an even messier love life. For most of the fourth season, she was in a love triangle between Gabriel and Alfie, choosing Gabriel at the end. However, Gabriel, being who he is, manages to make her regret making that choice quite soon.

Nevertheless, after some much-needed reflection, Emily breaks up with him. Things aren't bleak very long, as she ends up meeting an Italian man named Marcello, who is from Italy. Romance sparks, and Emily in Paris Season 5 finds us in:

"a tale of two cities: Rome and Paris. Straddling both, Emily takes love and life to the next level"

Laviscount reveals that the first episode of the fifth season of Emily in Paris was one of the biggest curveballs for him, as a viewer and as an actor in the show. Despite being a part of the show and having filmed it, he explains that it took him a couple of days to recover from the surprise that the first episode is:

"I don’t want to give away too much, but one thing I will say is … when I got episode 1 emailed over with their high-tech security … it took me about two or three days to kind of process. So much happens in the first episode that sets up the rest of the season. And it was definitely a curveball for me and for Alfie."

However, Lucien Laviscount's comments about his character Alfie's future on the show might be signalling that he and Emily are far from done, and he is "definitely in the mix". After Emily chooses Gabriel over him, he goes on to date somebody else. Laviscount goes on to tease that maybe the fact that his character is now dating someone else will bring the messy and jealous side of Emily to the forefront, so maybe she's not as over him as she thought herself to be:

"It’d be interesting to see if she did get a bit jealous this season, and who she was jealous about. Regarding Alfie’s new love interest that kind of pops up in season 4, I can’t say anything. This is the worst thing about it, but … there’s love in the cards for Alfie, I think, this season."

So, while Emily continues to enjoy her newfound Italian romance in Emily in Paris Season 5, messier things might be brewing back home.
