A quick recap of what happened in Disclaimer Episode 5
Episode 5 was filled with Catherine's complex emotions, and Stephen's manipulation and deception. The episode begins with Catherine's struggle after discovering the book, as her family relationships are getting strained.
After a fallout with her husband Robert, Catherine went back to her mother who's suffering from dementia. She gave Catherine a chance to open up about her pain and dark secrets, and since she has a weak memory, Catherine's mother might remember just half of the things she said.
Catherine finally talked about her past experiences in Italy and the regrets she has been carrying. Her mother's forgetfulness served as a temporary escape for Catherine and the support she needed the most at the moment.
Meanwhile, Stephen continues with his evil plan against Catherine and manipulates Nicholas through a fake online identity. Stephen pretends to be a young lad named Jonathan who dey resonates with Nicholas' emotional struggle as he faces neglect from his parents. Stephen uses this strategy to put Nicholas against Catherine, and he even succeeds in his plan.
He told Nicholas that his mother was involved in a scandalous relationship years ago, leaving Nicholas heartbroken. This startling revelation from Jonathan (who is actually Stephen) adds to Nicholas' self-doubt and battle with addiction.
The episode ends with Stephen being happy as he has turned almost everyone against Catherine. Robert had dinner with him and even apologized to Stephen for Catherine's actions.
