Dexter: Resurrection has kept details about the details regarding the upcoming July 11 release under wraps, apart from news about some cast additions. However, according to reports and the latest trailer, a fan favorite character might be making an appearance in the upcoming series, thirteen years after their original appearance on Dexter.

In extremely exciting news for fans (or should we say, surprise m..), Erik King, who played James Doakes, is all set to be resurrected, quite literally, since his explosive exit in Season 2 of the original show. Here's everything we know.

Erik King's return to Dexter: Resurrection is nothing short of poetic justice, mainly owing to the fact that he, being the scapegoat for the Bay Harbour Butcher case, has haunted the series and the franchise for too long. Doakes met a deadly and explosive end in Season 2 after being scapegoated, but he made an appearance in the Season 7 finale, titled "Surprise, Motherfu**er!", a catchphrase that has infamously been attached to his intense, no-nonsense attitude.

The trailer for Dexter: Resurrection has revealed that Miami Metro's Angel Batista, played by David Zayas, is leading the investigation, which has brought the Bay Harbour Butcher case back under the spotlight, and is asking one too many questions, leading towards an exposé of Dexter's dark and sordid past.

Therefore, it is nothing short of poetic justice that among the other posthumous callbacks, it is Doakes' return, even if it is as a hallucination, that stands out the most, being the most thematically fitting. Fans of the original series are extremely hyped to witness Erik King stepping back into his role in Dexter: Resurrection.

Apart from King, we also have two other characters who are making a resurrection of sorts. John Lithgow is returning to the franchise in this series as the Trinity Killer, along with Jimmy Smits, who is reprising his role as Miguel Prado. The Trinity Killer and Miguel Prado, much like Doakes, have been dead for several years during the events of Dexter: Resurrection, as it takes place shortly after the events of Dexter: New Blood, so they will also be returning as hallucinations.

At the moment, we have no information regarding when these hallucinations will be a part of the story, however, it makes sense that with everything that is happening in Dexter's life, his son having shot him, his dark past on the brink of being exposed, he is bound to be under a lot of mental pressure and stress, leading to his hallucinations, aspersonifications of his guilty consciousness.

And who knows, maybe Doakes' return to the franchise in Dexter: Resurrection could mark the entry of a younger version of him into the Original Sin universe.
