Daredevil: Born Again has had countless nods to the original Netflix show. One of these shoutouts was in the fifth episode of Born Again as it paid a reference to one of season 3's important characters significant to Matt Murdock. The said reference was to Sister Maggie, Matt's biological mother, who left Battlin' Jack Murdock and Matt, who was just a baby.
Season 3 introduces Maggie as a young nun who met Jack in a boxing ring and fell in love with him. But soon after giving birth to baby Matt, Maggie, suffering from postpartum depression, began to feel guilty for abandoning God. Thus, one day, she returns to the church, leaving Matt and Jack behind. She doesn't see Matt after that until Season 3, when Matt is the Devil of Hell's Kitchen.
While Matt is initially cold to Maggie, Father Lantom's death does repair their relationship in the Season 3 finale. However, after that, Joanne Whalley has yet to return as Sister Maggie in Daredevil: Born Again. Therefore, it was refreshing to hear that her character might still be around in the MCU and may probably appear in the series somewhere in the future.
Where is Sister Maggie in Daredevil: Born Again?
Daredevil: Born Again is seven episodes in, and we haven't seen Sister Maggie anywhere in the series. Therefore, it is pleasantly surprising to hear about her in the revival series. Matt mentions her in passing in the fifth episode to Yusuf Khan, Kamala's father. This does hint at the fact that Matt and Maggie's relationship might be more stable than it was the last time we saw them in 2018.
Even Joanne Whalley, the actress who played Sister Maggie in Daredevil Season 3, expressed a willingness to return to Daredevil: Born Again if asked. She sat down for an interview with Jamie Jirak of ComicBook.com in November 2022. In that interview, Whalley was asked about returning to the revival series. The actress responded:
“I loved Daredevil! I had such a great time on that, oh my God. I haven’t heard anything [about returning], but I would love to get the wimple on again, though. Talking about characters to play again, I loved her.”
Thus, even if she doesn't appear in any of the upcoming episodes of Daredevil: Born Again, she may potentially appear in the second season, which is currently filming.
What is Daredevil: Born Again about?
Born Again follows Matt Murdock, who is doing well in life, but a personal loss causes Matt to retire as the vigilante. However, Wilson Fisk's successful mayoral bid and the emergence of a psychotic serial killer muralist cause Matt to return as The Man Without Fear.
"In Marvel Television’s 'Daredevil: Born Again', Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities, is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course."
The seven episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are currently streaming on Disney+.
