Netflix is set to continue its docu-series streak with yet another entry titled Critical: Between Life and Death. The show will explore critical ER stories (with exclusive access) of the London Major Trauma System. As already confirmed by Netflix, the six-part documentary will premiere this July, whose working title, per Deadline, was just Critical.
Critical: Between Life and Death will leave glimpses of the way in which one of the best emergency medical services in the world operates. Moreover, the latest trailer has offered a sneak peek into how the paramedics are always:
"Ready to be able to deal with anything that comes through the door."
The creative team behind the upcoming docu-series is the same that helmed Channel 4's 24 Hours in A&E, and this time, the stakes are even higher. Prompt response is the most critical thing needed to tackle medical emergencies while dealing with trauma, and Critical: Between Life and Death will offer a first-person point of view on this.
When will Critical: Between Life and Death be released?
On July 23, 2025, Critical: Between Life and Death will exclusively premiere on Netflix with all six episodes dropping together. According to reports, mostly portable single cameras have been used to film the series, and body cams have been implemented for first-person POV sequences.
More about Critical: Between Life and Death
Critical: Between Life and Death will take us through the intense journey of paramedics as they respond to emergencies where each small decision can draw the fine line between life and death. One of the top production companies in the United Kingdom, The Garden, is at the helm of the project, and the show will focus on emergency calls (approximately 6000 in just one day) with 4 key locations featured (in and around London):
- St George's
- Royal London
- St Mary's
- King's College
The show will feature exclusive interviews with paramedics, trauma survivors, as well as other medical staff who have had their time in the ER. Critical: Between Life and Death will also portray how the London Ambulance Service functions and the way specialist surgeons operate (under immense pressure) on the victims of the accident cases.
Jermaine Blake is directing the series alongside executive producer Spencer Kelly. Mahi Iftikhar, along with Andrew Fitzpatrick, are the series producers. Among co-executive producers, we have:
- Rebecca Arnold
- Louise Bartmann
From NHS employees to emergency call handlers, the series will further highlight how each individual has a crucial role to play in the ER to make sure that no lives are lost. The interviews featured in Critical: Between Life and Death will also include statements on how the healthcare system in London has become more efficient over time (survival percentage is now higher than 50).
Identifying the most critical patients among thousands of calls coming in each day is one of the most challenging tasks. Not only the emergency response but also trauma handling as well as rehabilitation demand a lot of resilience from the medical units comprising road (and air) ambulance services, frontline nurses, paramedics, trauma handlers, as well as surgeons.
