Season 11 of Chicago Med dives into Sharon Goodwin’s personal life as she stands by her ex-husband Bert (Gregory Alan Williams) during a brutal health crisis. By late October 2025, things take a sharp turn. Bert’s health falls apart at his assisted living facility. He grows unpredictable, lashes out, and seems more confused than ever. It’s rough on him, but it’s just as tough for Sharon.

Lately, the show doesn’t hold back on Bert’s decline. He is deep in Alzheimer’s now, battling anger and confusion. Sharon comes to visit, and he will snap at her, push her away, and one time, after an argument over food, he yells, “I don’t want to be here!”

The stress piles up for Sharon. She is exhausted, pulled in every direction, and the toll is both emotional and physical. Everything comes to a head when Bert falls and ends up in a full-blown medical emergency. In that moment, the future is a big question mark, leaving Sharon and the whole Goodwin family reeling.

Bert Goodwin’s story in Chicago Med always circles back to Sharon Goodwin, his ex-wife and one of the show’s main characters. They have three kids together: Michael, Tara, and David, and their long marriage, over thirty years before they split, keeps popping up as a big piece of Sharon’s emotional world.

When Bert returned in recent seasons, things became awkward for Sharon. She tried hard to set some boundaries after the divorce, and even though the two didn’t fall back into old patterns, seeing Bert again brought up a lot of unresolved pain and family drama.

Now, with Bert’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis, Sharon and the rest of the Goodwin family have to face some tough truths. Sharon has moved on romantically, but she has stepped up to take care of Bert. Sometimes she pushes herself too far, trying to juggle her demanding job at the hospital and the responsibility of helping her ex-husband as his condition gets worse.

All of this adds more layers to Sharon’s character. It shows how much she is willing to sacrifice, how deeply she cares, and just how complicated things get when you are caring for someone from your past. Chicago Med keeps raising the emotional stakes as Bert’s illness becomes a bigger part of their lives.

Bert Goodwin gets his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in Season 9, Episode 6 of Chicago Med, I Told Myself That I Was Done With You.

It all starts when Bert starts acting off. He keeps forgetting things, seems confused, and sometimes just behaves in ways that don’t seem like him at all. Sharon Goodwin, his ex-wife, steps in since she is still listed as his emergency contact. She goes with him to see his neurologist, and that is when they get the official news: Bert has Alzheimer’s dementia.

The doctor explains what is going on and hands Sharon some information about the disease and what treatments are out there. Bert, though, doesn’t want to hear it. He pushes the pamphlets away and has a hard time even admitting this is real.

The show digs into how Sharon takes all this in. You see her shock, the weight of it all, and the way she starts bracing herself for what is coming. Dr. Daniel Charles gets involved and tells Sharon about some newer treatments and clinical trials that sound promising, but she knows this isn’t going to be easy for anyone.

The diagnosis turns Sharon’s life upside down. She has to figure out how to juggle her stressful job running the hospital with being there for Bert, all while trying to protect their grown kids from having to carry too much of the load.

In Chicago Med Season 11, Episode 5 (What’s Hiding in the Dark), Bert Goodwin’s health takes a sharp downward turn. Sharon visits him at his assisted living facility, but things have gotten worse: Bert’s Alzheimer’s has really ramped up. He gets angry, is easily agitated, and during one visit, he lashes out. He swats Sharon’s hand away and yells, which leaves Sharon shaken and guilty for losing her patience with him.

Then, right at the end of the episode, everything comes crashing down. Sharon gets a call that something has happened at the facility. When she arrives, she finds Bert unconscious on the floor. The show leaves us hanging, not revealing whether Bert will make it, and the credits roll with everyone left worrying about what is next.
