Casey Anthony's trial is one of the most controversial murder trials which generated quite a buzz on the internet and remains a hot topic for netizens to discuss.

Following the death of a 2-year-old Caylee in 2008, and speculation that her mother Casey Anthony killed her, Peacock released Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies in November 2022. The docuseries was made after Anthony served four years in prison over lying about her whereabouts and Caylee's disappearance in 2011.

Casey was initially arrested in 2008 for child neglect and false official statements about her work. The 22-year-old was even charged with first-degree murder but she was later found not guilty.

Things turned more suspicious after, Caylee's bones and remains of her dead body were discovered near Casey Anthony's family house on Dec. 11, 2008, as detailed in Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies.

Casey's 2011 trial became the most controversial and she was receiving hate on the internet as many believed she killed her own innocent toddler. Even though Casey blamed her father George Anthony for the death of Caylee Anthony in Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies, a source informed People that the grandparents "were absolutely devastated" after losing Caylee.

A meter reader was used to discover the toddler's body remains, and shockingly there was duct tape wrapped around her mouth. Her remains were skeletonized and it became tough for the forensic team to determine the cause of her death.

Initially, it was ruled as a homicide since Casey was the major suspect, and some prosecutors even alleged that Casey Anthony killed her daughter using chloroform and suffocated her to death with the tape.

According to CNN, former chief judge Belvin Perry said:

"I thought, while they may have had some flaws in their case, that there was a high probability that (Casey) would be found guilty of some form of homicide, and that did not occur."

He added:

"A number of jurors said the reason that they came back with “not guilty” was because the state could not prove how (Caylee) died."

The news network also interviewed medical expert Dr. Jan Garavaglia who expressed disappointment in how Caylee's death was handled. She reflected on Caylee's dead body packed in plastic bags and how her disappearance didn't trouble her mother for almost a month.

Dr. Garavaglia believed it was a murder and not an accident. However, Casey's defense team claimed that the little girl drowned in their family pool, and George Anthony disposed of his grandaughter's body.

Even detective John Allen claimed that Casey Anthony barely "seemed to have any remorse" over her only daughter's tragic death. Many didn't believe that Casey was innocent, but according to the trial she was not guilty and Caylee Anthony's death remains a mystery.
