What happened in season 2 episode 9?
The much hyped ninth episode of Brilliant Minds Season 2 aired this Monday. The episode focused on the parallel stories of Ericka helping Sam and Oliver helping Matthew. The firefighter is diagnosed with ALS, and actor Eric Dane reached out to NBC to play the character. Dane was recently diagnosed with the condition, and he was already a fan of the show.
Matthew is initially reluctant to accept help from his family as he doesn't want to be a burden. He even signs up for a medical facility, but his ex-wife and his daughter convince him to move back home under their care. The episode ends on a touching note as Matthew and his daughter visit an art gallery. Showrunner Michael Grassi spoke about this storyline in the Deadline interview:
"So while this story is specific to ALS and Matthew’s condition, it’s also universal in many ways. So those are all sort of some of the big themes that we were excited to talk about. The last thing we were excited to explore was this idea of, on our show, we talk about adaptation a lot, and we talk about how people adapt. One of the things about ALS that is difficult for a lot of patients is the adaptation never stops. So if someone has, let’s say, a spine injury and they go through surgery, you adapt to that, and you can potentially move forward from there. But I think something like ALS, once you adapt, something changes again, and you’re adapting again and then adapting again and adapting again. That is not easy by any means, because you’re always doing something new. So those are all things that we talked about early on that we were interested in exploring in this episode."
While this storyline has a happy ending, Sam's condition worsens in the episode's last scene. Ericka goes above and beyond to help Sam by contacting his mother, who is unaware of her son's medical requirement. He is in urgent need of a liver transplant, but the transplant committee has not cleared Sam for the medical procedure, endangering him.
The episode ends on a cliffhanger as Sam's family reaches the hospital, but he is unconscious and in urgent need of a transplant.
Binge the nine episodes of this season on Peacock as we wait for the upcoming one airing next Monday.
