Netflix formally announced in December 2023 that Blue Eye Samurai will return for a second season. The upcoming season will bring in more drama, adventure, and difficulty for the lead character, Mizu. Showrunners Amber Noizumi and Michael Green are optimistic that this production will push the show's limits. They even hinted that the story may run for three or four seasons and are contemplating a spin-off.
Blue Eye Samurai is an animated retelling of a samurai story. The show follows a half-Asian, half-French, half-British samurai who finds a way to wreak vengeance during Edo-period Japan. Husband-and-wife team Amber Noizumi and Michael Green have gotten much praise for their impressive animation and gripping character study in this series.
Production of the first season started in October 2020 and was finally dropped three years later, in November 2023. It has amassed four Emmy Awards.
What is the release date for Blue Eye Samurai Season 2?
Blue Eye Samurai was one of Netflix's surprise hits of 2023. Though there is a confirmed second season, no date has been given for when that will launch. Series creators recently chatted about exactly when we might expect season two to pop up on Netflix.
According to Executive Producer Jane Wu’s interview with Collider, he mentioned, if everything goes according to plan, viewers can expect Blue Eye Samurai season 2 to hit Netflix in 2026.
Reliving the plot of Blue Eye Samurai Season 1
The plot thrusts us to the closed-off 17th-century Japan, where it is rare to see a face that is not Japanese unless you are involved in illegal trade. Mizu knows this because only four white men lived in Japan at the time of her birth. She's out to track them down and kill them, one of whom may be her father, the man who brought her shame.
But in this society where women are not allowed to seek revenge, Mizu must hide her true identity, including even the smudge of blue eyes, as she goes about tracking down her prey. Joining her on this journey is Ringo, a passionate soba maker with big dreams; Taigen, a proud samurai with whom Mizu forms an uneasy alliance; and Princess Akemi, Taigen's fiancée, who seems to be living a far more luxurious life than Mizu.
Along with searching for her targets, the series will take the viewer on an adventure across Edo-era Japan, blending vibrant animation with a realistic edge.

What to expect from the second season of the Emmy-winning Netflix show Blue Eye Samurai?
Big changes are coming for the upcoming season of Blue Eye Samurai as the show's setting moves to Europe. At the end of season 1, Mizu leaves Japan for London to start her revenge mission, and this maximizes the possibility that season 2 will take place in Europe, most likely England.
Mizu still needs to find two of her possible fathers, and her desire for revenge is only growing stronger. Amber Noizumi and Michael Green, the showrunners of the series, discussed what's in store for fans with Tudum at Netflix.
"It would be an interesting part of Mizu’s personal journey to see how Europeans react to her. What would she think of Western culture when she’s suddenly immersed in it? Are they all the monsters she thinks they are?"
Season 1 of Blue Eye Samurai is available for fans to stream on Netflix.
