The first part of Tyler Perry’s latest show, Beauty in Black, premiered on Netflix on October 24, 2024.
This show is part of Perry’s creative partnership with Netflix, which means he will be writing, directing, and producing series and films under a multi-year-first-look deal. This deal includes Mea Culpa that premiered in February.
Regarding his deal with Netflix, Terry told Tudum,
“I was told many times over many years that Black entertainment doesn’t travel throughout the world. So, to have Netflix continue to disprove that over and over with everything I’ve put on the platform has been phenomenal.”
Terry’s previous work with Netflix includes films like A Jazzman’s Blues, A Madea Homecoming, and A Fall from Grace.
Let us now explore the release and other details of Beauty in Black.
Beauty in Black Release Date and Time
Since it is a Netflix show, Beauty in Black has been streaming exclusively on the platform since its premiere on October 24, 2024 at 4:00 am EST/ 1:00 am PST.
Beauty in Black is 16 episodes long and only the first 8 episodes have been released in part 1. The remaining 8 episodes will be released in part 2. However, there has been no confirmed update from Netflix regarding the release date of part 2 of the show.
What is Beauty and Black about?
Beauty and Black follows two women who despite having very different lives, end up getting entangled with each other.
It centers on Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams) and Mallory (Crystle Stewart) as the former struggles to make her ends meet as she gets kicked out of her home, whereas the latter successfully runs her own business.
Despite this huge difference in their social class and economic conditions, these two women’s life’s trajectories collide.
Beauty in Black is set in Atlanta and brings together a rich Black family atop a haircare dynasty and a dancer caught up in the underbelly of a famous Magic City strip club. In Perry’s own words,
“The hair care business here is huge [and] Magic City is huge, and I was like, ‘What happened if those worlds collided — the stripper world and this hair care business?’”
He further added that the key takeaway from part 1 of Beauty in Black is,
“Never ever underestimate the power of the underdog.”
Though Perry did find inspiration from “dual strip clubs around” Atlanta during the 90s and is familiar with family members of real-life hair care dynasties, the story of the show is entirely fictional and for entertainment purposes only.
