Amazon Prime Video officially renewed We Were Liars for Season 2 on September 17, 2025, just three months after the series premiered on June 18. Author E. Lockhart shared,

"[Carina Adly] MacKenzie and [Julie] Plec have big, big plans for Season 2, including everything readers of my books are dying to see onscreen — and a lot of surprises as well."

Creators Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie said,

"There are still numerous secrets hidden on Beechwood Island, and we are eager to continue uncovering them."

Erin Underhill, President of Universal Television, also praised the renewal as

"a testament to Julie and this cast and crew’s extraordinary talent".

The show adapts E. Lockhart’s bestselling young adult novel, first published in 2014. Season 1 focused on Cadence Sinclair Eastman, who returns to her family’s private island only to confront long-hidden family secrets triggered by a devastating event. The series attracted viewers familiar with the novel and new fans of psychological mystery-thriller content.

The renewal answers questions about the story’s continuation. Since Lockhart also wrote Family of Liars, a prequel novel, speculation has grown that Season 2 may adapt this connected story, further expanding the Sinclair family's history. Prime Video’s confirmation indicates plans to explore new plot directions while maintaining ties to the source material.

We Were Liars Season 1 recap

Season 1 of We Were Liars adapted the plot of the first book. The show's narrative revolved around Cadence's return to Sinclair Island for the first time following her accident. She attempted to reconnect with her cousins Johnny, Mirren, and family friend Gat. While there, she tried to put together the events that resulted in the gaps in her memory.

The series slowly unfolded that Cadence's cousins and friends had been killed in an accident whose details returned to her in the form of fragmented flashbacks. This was the reason behind her frequent headaches and her waning memories. Towards the conclusion of the season, the reality of what occurred on the island became the series' core conclusion, following the novel's dramatic end.

Season 2 renewal

Season 2 was announced by Prime Video. As per the platform's release, the series' continuation will delve deeper into the Sinclair family's story. With the first book's story arc already being translated on screen, the option for a source that's been made available is in E. Lockhart's 2022 prequel novel, Family of Liars.

The prequel is about an earlier generation of Sinclairs and their teenage years, as well as when they are on the island. This gives future Season 2 content something to work with, introducing new characters while still connected to the series' existing family legacy. Season 2 is expected to draw from E. Lockhart’s prequel novel, Family of Liars, though official plot details remain under wraps.

What to expect next from We Were Liars?

Although Prime Video has not announced the production timeline, the renewal confirms that the show will go beyond Cadence's point of view. News of casting, such as whether Season 1 cast members return in any role, has not yet been released. The timing of Season 2 production and release should be updated by Prime Video in subsequent announcements.

Streaming services frequently apply original translations to develop multi-season storylines where connected works exist. With Family of Liars as a connective novel, the Sinclair family background is a source of content for expansion. Fans of the novel series and audiences of season one can anticipate a continuation rooted in E. Lockhart's written materials.
