The show is set in the East End of London in the 1880s, combining crime, class struggle, and bare-knuckle boxing. Created by the creator of Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight, A Thousand Blows Season 2 starts a year after the dramatic finale of Season 1. Hezekiah Moscow, played by Malachi Kirby, is a Jamaican immigrant who is seeking a better life and gets sucked into the illegal boxing business in London. A Thousand Blows Season 2 shows him more troubled and tough and dealing with loss and betrayal. It is Kirby who provides the story with its emotional appeal.
Mary Carr, portrayed by Erin Doherty, is a daring gang leader and a former leader of a real-life crime group, Forty Elephants, which is composed of all female members. This season, she comes back with more dangerous plans. Doherty renders Mary a shrewd, fearless and unpredictable disposition.
Henry “Sugar” Goodson, played by Stephen Graham, is a renowned bare-knuckle boxer who loses his grip and strength in A Thousand Blows Season 2. He is violent, intricate and imperfect. The downfall of Sugar is sad and gripping due to Graham and his performance.
Edward Goodson, Treacle, played by James Nelson-Joyce, is the younger brother of Sugar and a faithful supporter. As tensions in the family mount, he brings some emotion, making the story more realistic.
Jason Tobin as Mr. Lao is a clever survivor who assisted Hezekiah. He attempts to move on with his past, but tragedy follows him. Tobin balances appeal with a feeling of danger.
Supporting cast
A Thousand Blows Season 2 broadens the universe of the core three characters with an excellent combination of recurring characters and new faces, all contributing to the social world of the show.
Hannah Walters stars as Eliza Moody, the older and wiser second-in-command of the Forty Elephants, the qualified and highly nurturing woman who strikes a balance between Mary’s ambition and wisdom. Darci Shaw reappears as Alice Diamond, the right hand of Mary, who plots with sharpness, ensuring that the gang operates smoothly.
Esme Long, played by Morgan Hilaire, is a devoted member who finds it difficult to cope with grief. Anne Glover (Caoilfhionn Dunne) and Belle Downer (Jemma Carlton) remain as Forty Elephants whose lives are shaped by the plans of Mary. Nadia Albina comes in playing the role of Verity Ross, who adds another intelligent and brutal voice to the gang.
Daniel Mays is introduced as a fight promoter called William Punch Lewis, who is also at the center of the brutal boxing scene of this season. Newcomers Robert Glenister as Indigo Jeremy and Aliyah Odoffin as Victoria Davis stir up trouble in the criminal and high-society worlds, while Ned Dennehy’s Bull Jeremy and Catherine McCormack’s Sophie Lyons have some personal agendas, making the tale in A Thousand Blows Season 2 even more complicated.
