Spoiler Alert: The following contains detailed spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 13.
When bad luck follows
A man named Archie is unexpectedly fired from his job at a fast-food company. Disheartened upon arriving home, he finds the place in disarray. While cleaning, he notices that his fiancée and cousin have returned. Caught in bed, Archie realizes that they are having an affair. His smartwatch dials emergency services, and responders arrive to take him for a medical check-up.
Archie has a heart-to-heart conversation with Hen at 118. He tells her that he feels invisible to those around him, which Hen understands. Earlier that day, she had arrived at 118, where none of her co-workers remembered it was her birthday. However, she offers him some advice, saying that he must move on and do something for himself.
Rebuilding relationship
In El Paso, Eddie Diaz is still working on his relationship with Christopher and finding ways to bond with his son. He decides to cook dinner for Christopher and wants to tell him about going to a Mavericks game together. He is hopeful that he will also move in with him. However, things don't go according to plan when Eddie's parents arrive and bring some food with them.
What follows is a tension-filled dinner. Eddie finally tries to tell his son about the tickets to the game when his father, Ramon, stops him. He informs Eddie that Christopher has a chess tournament that weekend and that Ramon will be accompanying him as his coach.
Eddie finally takes a stand
Even the next day when Eddie meets Helena, he is left crestfallen by her harsh words. After a conversation with Buck, Eddie decides to go watch Christopher at the chess tournament, which Ramon had taken him to. Eddie learns that everyone at the event thinks Ramon is Christopher's father, which makes Eddie feel even worse. Initially, Eddie just watches them from a distance.
Christopher is nervous about the tournament and ends up throwing up during a match. A concerned Eddie takes Christopher to the washroom to help him clean up. Christopher confesses to Eddie that he doesn't enjoy chess and feels pressured to participate in order to please his grandparents.
Eddie is upset and reassures Christopher that he doesn't have to do anything he dislikes. He also promises that he will move in with him. The news makes Christopher happy, and he innocently asks, "Will you be my dad again?" to which Eddie replies, "I've always been your dad; now I'm going to start acting like it."
Eddie and Christopher return to his mother's house to pack his belongings. He tells her about Christopher's dislike for chess tournaments and informs her that he is taking Christopher home with him.
Things turn around
Meanwhile, Archie chooses to live in his car for the time being. He was carrying his belongings when a group of people pushed past him to get to the bus. Archie sheds his kind demeanor as fury takes over. Things escalate quickly when he grabs one of his knives and chases after them to the bus. He gets on and points it at the passengers, telling them that he does not wish to harm them. However, a passenger attempting to reason with Archie ends up falling onto the knife.
The 118 arrive at the scene to save the passenger, and Hen tries to calm Archie, who slowly exits the bus. When Archie attempts to give Hen a birthday gift from his pocket, Hen becomes cautious and pushes him to the ground to shield him from the police, who are about to shoot him. She ultimately saves his life.
Although feeling down about no one remembering her birthday, Hen had a belated celebration surrounded by her family: Athena, Boddy, and Buck.
