ABC’s hit procedural drama, 9-1-1, recently did the unthinkable by killing off a main character, shocking fans and the members of LAFD Station 118.
In the episode titled, Lab Rats, Captain Robert ‘Bobby’ Nash, played by Peter Krause, sacrificed himself in order to save Howard ‘Chimney’ Han (Kenneth Choi) after they were both infected by CCHF (Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever), and there was only one antidote available.
Bobby, being the selfless individual he has been since the beginning of the procedural drama, decided to hide the fact that he was infected, too, so that Chimney could take the antidote and survive.
Although Bobby would have done this for any of his firefighters from 118, doing it for Chimney made more sense as his and Maddie’s second child is on the way. After the traumatic experience that Maddie had recently gone through, it was already decided that he wouldn’t let Chimney’s children grow up fatherless.
Therefore, Maddie and Chimney’s announcement about their second child in episode 6 that aired last year became a tease for what was to come.
More on this in our story.
9-1-1: Maddie’s second baby announcement and her tragic experience with Amber Braeburn set Bobby’s death arc
Getting into a life-threatening situation is not a new thing for the first responders of Station 118. However, one of these situations did end up with the station losing one of the most important members of the team.
In 9-1-1 season 8 episode 6, titled Confessions, Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character, Maddie, and Chimney announced that they were going to have a second baby. Exciting news for them and their close ones; however, the events unfolding right after that resulted in the tragic fate of Bobby Nash.
In the later episodes, Maddie was kidnapped by the villainous detective Amber Braeburn (Abigail Spencer), who kidnapped her and slit her throat. Right after announcing her pregnancy and later going through a gruesome and traumatic experience might have set Nash’s death arc, as he wouldn’t want tragedy to befall Chimney and Maddie’s family.
In light of what Maddie went through, Bobby might have decided that he would make sure the Han family does not experience another tragedy in these crucial moments and sacrificed himself so that Chimney could go back to his family.
More on Bobby’s death arc in 9-1-1
His death was a sacrifice for one of the members, which will also result in many more storylines to come due to the ripple effect it had on everyone.
While talking to Variety, Peter Krause shared his thoughts on his character’s death. He stated:
"Bobby Nash was written in sacrifice and he was built for this. First responders risk their lives on the job so that others can see another day. His story arc honors them."
It might be a huge loss for the firefighters in 118, but through Bobby’s shocking death, the show depicted how risky and life-threatening their jobs are.
