Singer and songwriter, Aliaune Badara Thiam, popularly known as Akon and his wife Tomeka Thiam are reportedly heading for a divorce. First reported by TMZ, Tomeka reportedly filed for divorce a few days before their 29th marriage anniversary. According to court documents secured by Billboard, Tomeka and the Beautiful singer got married on September 15, 1996.

Citing "irreconcilable differences", Tomeka is reportedly seeking joint legal custody and "sole physical custody" for their 17-year-old daughter, Journey. Additionally, Thiam has requested "spousal support" but has filed the motion for Akon not to receive any. Tomeka would often take to her Instagram profile (@mekas.world) to post pictures of her family, including Akon's reported nine children.

Akon and Tomeka Thiam are reportedly heading for a divorce after approximately three decades of marriage. The news of their divorce comes amid speculations about the Smack That singer's alleged preferences for polygamy. While the singer has not publicly spoken about his marital relationships, he has confirmed previously that he has two daughters and seven sons, per Billboard.

1993: Aliaune and Tomeka reportedly meet for the first time

While there are mixed reports on when the duo met, African news outlet,Tuko, reported that they met at a party in 1993. According to the outlet, Aliaune was 20 years old at the time and Tomeka was 18.


1996- 2010s: Aliaune and Tomeka get married and reportedly share five children

News outlets note that the couple got married on September 15, 1996 and had their first son, Ali Thiam, on May 27, 1996.


2018: Tomeka goes on an Instagram Live to answer questions

According to a news outlet, Amomama, Tomeka reportedly went live on Instagram and revealed their initial interactions. She noted,

"He put that West African Spell on me! Been trying to get that spell off since then!"

2020: Aliaune reveals his thoughts about polygamy

Without spilling the beans on his alleged relationships, the Don't Matter singer expressed his thoughts about polygamy on The Zeze Mills Show, per People. He explained that it is "part of" his "culture" and added,

"We didn’t go outside of our African culture when we got to the Western world. See, the flaw that the Western world made is they created all these rules without putting nature into account.”

As of now, the singer has not publicly disclosed any information about his divorce from Tomeka. In other news, Complex magazine reported that the singer is currently working on the development of his controversial 'Akon City' in his home country, Senegal.
