Liv Tyler opened up about some aspects of her family life on an April 13, 2025, episode of the Sibling Revelry podcast. The Lord of the Rings actress spoke about finding out at age 11 or 12 that her biological father was Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and how it affected her adoptive dad, Todd Rundgren:

"I think it's probably still very hard and painful, and I don't speak to him enough. I love him. He took care of me as if he was Dad."

Liv Tyler, born in 1977 to Bebe Buell and Steven Tyler, spoke about growing up with Rundgren:

“I love him. I have brothers from him and I had a whole family with them. He took care of me like he was [my] dad."

Liv’s mom dated Steve on and off in the ‘70s. The actress revealed that she found out about her true parentage when she attended one of the singer’s concerts, and her mom revealed it to her. She later confirmed it through a paternity test.

Liv Tyler recalled experiencing shock once it was revealed that Steve Tyler of Aerosmith was her father

During the podcast, Liv recounted how she received the news of Steve Tyler being her father:

"It was layers. The first wave was shock. After that concert, we went home, and my mom had a chaise lounge in front of a window. I remember sitting there for what felt like three days, but it was probably three hours."

She added that she concluded that she had two dads and felt love from both sides. However, she realized when she got older that she needed therapy.

The actress explained how Todd Rundgren had taken on the role of a father to her as Steve battled with drug use:

"As the story goes, [my mom] called Todd and said she was pregnant, and he asked her to come home to where they lived in Woodstock in upstate New York,” Liv continued. “He very courageously and lovingly said, ‘This child needs a father and I will be the father.’”

She added that she was born Liv Rundgren.

Liv Tyler, who appeared on the podcast alongside her half-sister Mia Tyler, spoke about how she would attend her father’s shows, having no idea about him or her half-sister.

Mia commented on their complex childhood, recounting one incident:

“I remember there were no kids backstage. So we played hard that night. And we were at this VIP area, outside of the green rooms, and we were just like, you know, doing our eight and nine-year-old thing, and this fan lady came up, and she was like, 'Oh my god, you girls are so cute. Are you guys sisters?'"

In an interview with The Guardian in 2017, Liv Tyler expressed gratitude to Todd Rundgren for choosing to be her father figure, adding that it was “a big thing” for a man to choose to father a child he knew wasn’t his.
