Novelist Mario Vargas Llosa died at 89. The news of his death was shared by his children, Álvaro, Gonzalo, and Morgana Vargas Llosa. They wrote that they plan to follow his father’s wishes in the days ahead. There would be no public ceremony, and the family hoped to be given privacy and space to say their goodbyes alongside close friends and relatives.
Mario Vargas Llosa was married to Patricia Llosa. After they separated, he had a relationship with Isabel Preysler, a TV show host. In the late 1990s, Isabel Preysler became the face of the Spanish Ferrero Rocher chocolate advertisements.
She also has a star on a well-known street in Puerto Banús. In October 2024, Preysler was recognized at the Spanish magazine Mujerhoy Awards in Madrid. She received an award because of her significance and influence in Spanish society.
When she accepted the award, she joked that she was probably getting older since she had been receiving so many honors lately. Mario Vargas Llosa and Preysler, however, called off their relationship in 2022.
In the X post announcing their father's demise, his children, Álvaro, Gonzalo and Morgana Vargas Llosa, wrote:
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce that our father, Mario Vargas Llosa, passed away peacefully in Lima today, surrounded by his family. His departure will sadden his relatives, his friends and his readers around the world, but we hope that they will find comfort, as we do, in the fact that he enjoyed a long, adventurous and fruitful life, and leaves behind him a body of work that will outlive him.”
What did Isabel Preysler say after separating from Mario Vargas Llosa?
Preysler and Mario met at an event in 2015 where they were supposed to meet Prince Charles. When Preysler and Mario called off their relationship three years back, the TV host shared a statement on their breakup with Hola! However, she did not specify the reason for their split. Her statement read:
“Mario and I have decided to definitively end our relationship. I don’t want to give any statements and I’ll be thankful for any help from my friends and the media in order to help us with our decision.”
The former couple lived together in Puerta de Hierro. After they broke up, Mario Vargas Llosa moved out of that home and moved to his apartment in Puerta del Sol, according to the media outlet.
Lecturas magazine director, Luis Pliego, had previously discussed the couple’s separation with La mirada critica. He said the relationship was called off due to jealousy. Pliego said:
“It seems there was an underlying issue of jealousy, as Isabel herself told some sources. He wanted her to be at home, more alert to him, fulfilling the role that Patricia, his ex-wife, had played in his life. Isabel Preysler was not prepared to do that in Vargas Llosa's life.”
Meanwhile, according to EDATV, other people who knew Mario Vargas Llosa cited compatibility as the reason behind the split.
Vargas Llosa’s novels often explore the themes of power and dishonesty. Some of his works include The Time of the Hero, Conversation in the Cathedral, and The Feast of the Goat.
