The suspect, surnamed Liu, has confessed to killing her. He worked in a nightclub as a security guard. The police arrested him the next morning, and investigators say he attacked her during an argument over £10,530 he said he claimed to have lent her during their relationship.

Witnesses say Liu forced her into a nearby stairwell. There, he allegedly slit her throat and fled to his grandfather’s house. Police found him early the following morning and took him into custody, where he admitted to the killing. He said it began over money he claimed he lent her during their relationship.

Reports by The Sun state that before her death, Irene posted about the danger she felt. She shared an image of her domestic violence complaint against Liu. She warned him,
