Twitch is granting streamers an extended grace period to download their VODs before limiting them to 100 hours of storage.
The streaming platform has now set the deadline to May 19, which gives users a little over a month to take action about their Video on Demand content, and is over a month from the original date that was set. In their original statement on X, published on February 19, the company said:
"We’re implementing a 100 hr storage limit for Highlights & Uploads starting 4/19. This won’t apply to Past Broadcasts (VODs) or clips. Less than 0.5% of streamers exceed 100hrs & this content accounts for <0.1% of hours watched. Users will be notified."
In an update that came out on April 14, Twitch posted:
"We're extending the deadline to May 19th, 2025. We know this change is tough. We've improved download speeds, exports, & expanded bulk selection from 20 to 100 to make it easier to download and delete your highlights. Changes will roll out in product by the end of the day!"
Everything we know about Twitch's latest changes:
Twitch is the dominating platform when it comes to streaming, and the Amazon-owned platform boasts some of the most prolific streamers as its users, including Kai Cenat, xQc, and more.
The streaming platform has been restructuring itself, and some of the changes welcomed online include allowing streamers to multi-stream across various platforms, unbanning channels that were previously banned indefinitely, and offering a more succinct reason for suspensions.
However, the limit on highlights and VODs has been thoroughly decried online. The change prompted Kai Cenat to give his two cents, as he said during his recent Batman stream:
“Wait, chat, I ain’t gon lie, it says my storage is filled? Bro, what? Why does VODs have storage? What? No! Hold on bro, nah, they snapping bro. What is they doing? Gang, they put the limit for highlights and uploads at 100 hours only. I have 561 hours’ worth of footage! Why did they just?”
The previous deadline had been set to April 19, and droves of online users called out the platform for rushing them to meet it.
“THANKS FOR MAKING IT BETTER IN THE LAST WEEK NOW THAT IM F**KING DONE,” NickAstalos said. “This whole change has been rolled out horribly. you were clearly NOT ready for this. gave us NO notice for highlights.”
LevelUpYourGame, added:
“I deleted over a decade of VODs since you wouldn’t even let me create a highlight of a stream without doing so first. And now nearly 2 months later there’s an extension? Amazing.”
Given the mounting backlash against this change, it remains to be seen whether Twitch rethinks some of its decisions.
