After Lil Nas X's arrest and court appearance, his father, Robert Stafford, spoke to NBC News and TMZ outside the courthouse in Van Nuys, California. The reporters asked Lil Nas X's father if his son had taken any illegal drugs prior to his arrest, to which he said:
"Absolutely not."
As Lil Nas X pleads not guilty to four felony charges after he allegedly assaulted three officers and resisted arrest, Stafford said that his son is "very remorseful for what happened". He continued:
"He's going to get the help that he needs and just keep him in your prayers... Give him the same grace and mercy that God gives everyone."
Montero's father also said that the two spoke after his arrest. He elaborated:
"He's doing great mentally. We shed tears, we shed laughter, but he's in great spirits... He's gonna be great.”
What did Lil Nas X's attorney say about the rapper?
Lil Nas X hired President Donald Trump's attorney to defend him against the four felony charges. Drew Findling confirmed that the Old Town Road singer's bond has been set at $75,000. He added:
"He’ll make that bond. He’ll be out today."
Findling also revealed that the 26-year-old singer will have to attend four Narcotics Anonymous meetings every week. His pre-trial has been set for September 15.
Drew highlighted the fact that Montero has never truly been in legal trouble prior to this incident. He said:
"We're doing our due diligence to address everything we can about this young man... I mean, obviously, Mr. Hill has an amazing career, 26 years old, never been in trouble a split second his life, as [attorney] Christy [O’Connor] so eloquently stated in court, and so we're just going to address everything."
He further defended his client by saying:
"Don't forget he's 26 years old, so it's not unusual for something like this to happen. Particularly when you have the pressure of being recognized internationally like him, and so we're going to do our best to address these things, and the best way to do that is just get the team and surround him with a team of people. … You can see how much his dad cares and his family cares … and we're just getting this outpouring of love and support for him."
Lil Nas X's father has assured the public that his son is in "great spirits" and is getting the help that he needs. Montero's lawyer has also asked the public to understand that this is his first major encounter with the law. The singer is expected to attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings and focus on his recovery as legal proceedings continue.
