Madonna recently took to her social media to respond to narratives about other women 'copying' her, responding with the defense of 'copying' as inspiration:

“Did you see so-and-so copied you?”

And right beneath the question she wrote,

“God forbid a woman takes inspiration.”

This has triggered reactions from the Internet, with some pointing out that her singer's current response contradicts the way she responded to Lady Gaga:

"Where was this energy for gaga."

Some others reacted similarly, criticizing the singer for not being supportive earlier in her career. Others, however, supported the singer, and her gesture of support towards women inspired by her:

"took her decades to see things differently… she should’ve had this supportive energy to a young rising pop star instead of feeling threatened and calling her “reductive” one netizen stated.
"Oh yeah? When Lady Gaga first started to rise she said Madonna was her inspiration and that that "Express Yourself" inspired "Born this Way". Which Madonna then trashed her and said how the song was a blatant ripoff." another person pointed out.

More fans chimed in with their opinions.

"funny how many fans are seething over this, when their favorite artists themselves admitted how much they’re inspired by her. Like not even your favorite singer agrees with you. How sad." One fan said.
"Better late then never I suppose... good for her for seeing the light, but I’ll always be sad for how Gaga was treated by one of her idols when she was up and coming." A netizen stated.
"Madonna’s got a point. Calling it copying when women draw inspiration is just petty. Let’s celebrate creativity, not tear it down." one commenter opined.

Madonna called out Lady Gaga for 'blatantly ripping off her songs'

Back in 2015, Madonna called out Lady Gaga for ripping off her songs, stating to Rolling Stone in an interview published in 2015,. This was after she called Gaga reductive back in 2012, starting off a back-and-forth. The singer stated to Rolling Stone:

"I don’t think she wants my crown, We live in a world where people like to pit women against each other. And this is why I love the idea of embracing other females who are doing what I’m doing…The only time I ever criticized Lady Gaga was when I felt like she blatantly ripped off one of my songs."

The singer continued by saying that she thinks that Lady Gaga is building her own niche. She also acknowledged Gaga's talent and creativity.

"It's got nothing to do with 'she's taking my crown' or 'she's in some space of mine.' She has her thing. I do think she's a very talented singer and songwriter. It was just that one issue. She has her thing. I do think she’s a very talented singer and songwriter."

The singer further added,

"It was just that one issue. And everybody’s obviously running with it and turned it into a huge feud, which I think is really boring, quite frankly. And you know what? I don’t care anymore. Here’s the thing: one day everyone’s going to shut up about it. You’ll see! I have a plan."

In 2016, Lady Gaga responded to the whole feud, stating in her 2016 interview with Zane Lowe:

"Madonna and I are very different. Just saying. We're very different. I wouldn't make that comparison at all, and I don't mean to disrespect Madonna. She's a nice lady, and she's had a fantastic huge career. Biggest pop star of all time. But I play a lot of instruments. I write all my own music. I spend hours and hours a day in the studio. I'm a producer. I'm a writer. What I do is different..."

The singer and Lady Gaga later appeared to have reconciled back in 2019, when the duo posed together for a picture at the former's Oscars after-party. Neither singer has responded to the internet reactions to Madonna's post given above.
