On April 9, 2025, Santa Cruz hardcore band Scowl made their television debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The band performed their single "Tonight (I'm Afraid)" on the show. It is a track off their recently released sophomore album, Are We All Angels.

As reports suggest, the first half of Scowl's performance leaned into the alt-rock genre. Eventually, it featured the more familiar hardcore music. Frontwoman Kat Moss was seen transitioning from singing to a full-throttle scream.

The band was formed in Santa Cruz, California. Scowl started from the Bay Area's punk and hardcore scene. They have gained a notable fanbase worldwide through touring and their music.

One of their beloved releases is How Flowers Grow in 2021. Their new album, Are We All Angels, was released on April 4, 2025, via Dead Oceans.

Netizens quickly rushed to the comment section of the YouTube video as they shared their thoughts over Scowl's TV debut performance. Below are what some of them had to say:

"This is so cool to see! I’ve watched this band play live in rooms that barely fit 100 people and now they’re playing on network tv. Scowl really deserves the world!" declared a fan.
"So happy for Scowl! Discovered them roughly 2 years ago, and I’ve been supporting them nonstop. Gone to all their shows & shows they’re supporting acts. Gone Santa Cruz twice for their annual dance party. Bought merch. They deserve it & hope they get more," shared another.
"I just saw Scowl in concert with Movements, and they were awesome!! Kat actually jumped down into the audience and screamed in my face, it might have been one of the best moments of my life lol! Rock on Scowl!!" lauded a third.
"Incredible band, so happy to see them get national exposure and bring the new generation of hardcore/punk to the masses! With Knocked Loose and Poppy on Kimmel and Turnstile on Meyers, metal and hardcore are getting so much more national attention and I couldn’t be happier. Picked up the new album that week and it’s incredible, keep booking bands like this Stephen (or whoever does your musical guest booking)!" penned a fourth.
"Never heard of Scowl before 2025, then I saw them play live on the Salty Dog Cruise... LOVED IT! At the beginning of this song, I thought it must be one of their 'cooling down' songs, but they geared up to what I remembered of their gig halfway through. Shame I only got to see them play once on the cruise (they played three shows)," commented a fifth.
