Akon is following in the footsteps of his peers and venturing into the world of country music.

The veteran singer spoke to TMZ this week in New York City, where he revealed he has been remixing songs from his catalog over the years into country songs, featuring country artists.

“I’m actually redoing my whole catalog in country,” he said. “I’m not even joking… This has been an idea for years like forever. The project has been in motion for the last five years. But starting next month, y’all gonna start seeing all the releases.”

The R&B and dance-pop artist also divulged that hit tracks like Locked Up will be redone and they will be performed by country artists, while Akon himself will assume a guest role. “They’re country artists featuring me. They’re the ones performing them.”

The singer, whose real name is Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, is known for blending elements of R&B, hip-hop, and reggae with elements of African beats and melodies. His style is characterized by its smoothness and depth.

Everything we know about Akon's latest projects:

Speaking with the outlet, Thiam revealed he's been working on this project for five years now.

"It's been an idea for years, like, forever," he said. "Starting next month you're gonna start seeing all the releases," he continued.

At the time of writing, it remains unclear just which country artists he will be working with. Notably, though, he's also working on his Akon City project. For the unversed, the artist announced back in 2018 that he would be building an eco-friendly city in Senegal which, at the time, he called a "real-life Wakanda."

As reported by Hot New Hip Hop, his goal is to rely on blockchain and cryptocurrency technology to power the city. However, in the years since, updates about the same have been scarce, though just this past November, he revealed that the plan is still in motion, he just announced it too early.

“My biggest thing was I promoted it way, way, way too early,” he admitted at the time. “Of course, anything that exciting that would change a culture, people will naturally want to know what’s happening right now, assuming that it’s already happening. But it was in a process of creating." During that interview, Akon also admitted it was "nowhere near [done]."

Currently, it remains unclear just when the singer plans on releasing his latest project, while further details about his contributions to Senegal also remain under wraps.
