The Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, has been reported for a potential split into two films. The film's director is Antoine Fuqua.
As revealed by Deadline, the nearly four-hour-long project might follow in the footsteps of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Wicked as it might turn into a two-part movie. This report has sparked mixed reactions online.
The biopic stars Michael Jackson's nephew Jaafar Jackson in the lead role. Reports suggest that it aims to feature the life of the King of Pop as it is expected to cover everything from his early days in Gary, Indiana, to his rise as a global icon.
However, the film has been reportedly facing significant hurdles, which include script rewrites, legal complications, and reshoots, among others. Another noteworthy matter centers around the film's possible portrayal of allegations against the beloved singer, which the pop icon's estate has strictly prohibited from being dramatized, reports claim.
Pop Base took to its official X (formerly Twitter) page to share:
"Sources tell Deadline that the Michael Jackson biopic could be split into two parts. While not definite, the option is on the table as it’s an almost 4-hour cut."
Internet reacts to Michael Jackson biopic's possible split reports
Enthusiasts were quick to gather in the comment section of Pop Base's X post as they voiced their thoughts regarding the reports. Below are what some of them had to comment:
"That would be terrible", declared a netizen.
"It's just rumors for now but it will be a masterful blockbuster no matter how they choose to go about it. It is THEE Michael Jackson after all", opined another.
"One part would be more than enough", penned a third.
"Lionsgate says differently for their reason for not showing it at Cinema con, journalists running with whatever headline they want to per usual", noted a fourth.
"Considering MJ’s life and legacy, a two-part film makes sense. There’s too much history to squeeze into just a couple of hours", stated a fifth.
Others also chimed in:
"If there is a biopic that truly deserves two parts, it’s The King", hyped an X user.
"Not sure 2 films are enough. He was in the music industry for forty years plus", penned another.
"A two-part Michael Jackson biopic sounds epic! With almost 4 hours of footage, there's bound to be a ton of untold stories. What do you think they’ll focus on the most?", asked a third.
"We will be watching whether it’s 4 or 10 hours long, one part or twelve parts. This is just speculation for now & nothing has been confirmed.", noted a fourth.
According to reports from Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, the decision to split Michael is due to its runtime, which reportedly nears four hours. Producer Graham King and other executives believe that dividing the film into two parts could allow for a more comprehensive storytelling approach, reports suggest.
