Queen of 2000s pop, Kesha, gives a tribute to Briteny Spears and shares details about her new album, tours, and more.
In a recent interview with Paper Magazine for their latest cover shoot, Kesha Rose Sebert, popularly known as Ke$ha, talks about her new music, upcoming tour, and one of her muses, Britney Spears.
The Timber singer was being interviewed by Christopher Delmar Caldwell, better known by his stage name, Bob the Drag Queen. They started the interview by discussing how they met after Kesha invited Bob to one of her shows and how both their recent works share the concept of freedom. While Bob, who is a drag queen, comedian, actor, activist, musician, author, and reality TV personality, talked about his new book, Harriet Tubman: Live In Concert, Kesha dove into her upcoming album, Period. The singer portrayed their relationship as a mutually respected love for each other's craft.
"It started as a mutual respect for each other's art, because I've always respected the art of drag and also the political significance of drag. I really identify with people that alchemize the fight for human rights."
Kesha's new album!
Kesha's new album, Period, stylized with a single dot, is coming out on the 4th of July with the early release of her new song YIPPEE-KI-YAY and the title track, Freedom. When talking about the inspiration behind her new work, she states,
"The muse for my other albums has been a lot of external factors or things I've been going through, things that were unavoidable to create art about. And to be honest with you, this is my first album where I'm truly free in every way. And not only in all the legal ways, but also I'm really working on healing and feeling free from any residual emotional turmoil that's left in my body."
She states that her legal battle with producer Dr. Luke spanned over a decade with suits and countersuits before they came to a settlement in 2023. The conflict started in 2014 when the singer sued Dr. Luke for alleged sexual assault, battery, and other misconduct.
She further talks about the freedom she has achieved over time from different aspects of her life, referring to the aptly titled title track,
"But freedom, by definition, is the power and the right to act and speak and think as you want to without any restraint. And it's terrifying for me to really embody full freedom, because it's the act of really embodying who you are to the fullest."
To this, Bob talks about the misfortune of the way the industry treats successful women, giving the example of the iconic pop star Britney Spears. Later in the conversation, Bob brought up the subject again in a more casual setting, asking,
"I think you have a good Britney Spears in you, too."
Kesha wholeheartedly agrees,
"Don't we all have a Britney in us? Come on." she further states."Yes, she is one of my mothers, as well."
giving her a well-deserved shout-out.
Kesha's Summer tour
The TikTok singer also announced her summer tour, which will start on July 1st in Utah. The tour, which is officially called "Tits Out Tour" will span all across North America. Other artists that will be touring along with her include Scissor Sisters, Slayyyter, and Rose Gray. The singer is also making history in her career by performing at NYC’s Madison Square Garden for the first time.
Taking in the message from her album, she talks about the importance of embracing oneself and wishes to create a safe space for everyone, at least during her concerts.
"My mission with this album is to create a safe space for people to feel fully embodied and liberated. That's what this album stands for, that's what I'm going through personally. This summer, I'm going on tour. If you want to find your community and find a safe space for you to fully embody exactly who you are and be celebrated, I invite you to come join us. I would like to start a revolution of love. I want to create a traveling summer of love, a community of love. I want to give all of us a place to come and be ourselves."
And in the most Kesha fashion, the singer encourages her fans to glitter it up and dance out loud.
"The most political act right now is to be happy and to be free and to spread love. And even when all the forces feel like they're against you — to put on that makeup and to put on your glitter and to dance."
In the end, Bob talks about the monumental comeback of the biggest female artists of the 2000s and how millennials are, in a way, healing.
"I'm not trying to start a generational war, but millennials are winning so hard right now. Beyoncé's back, Lady Gaga's back, Lizzo’s back, Kesha's back."
