Singer Kelly Clarkson recently highlighted the struggles of being the first-ever winner of American Idol and called out fellow talent show judges, who once loathed the idea.
Kelly Clarkson, who was the first winner in the history of the popular singing competition American Idol, took to Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast to talk about the struggles that came with it. In the episode, which came out on 27th March, the Stronger singer spoke up about the unconventional road she took to success and how her peers continued to look down on her for the same.
"I had no one, I was the first winner. It was hard." she started.
Without naming anyone, she continued:
People were really mean. People that were really mean have been coaches. You know what I’m saying? Like, hated talent shows, and they ended up being on The Voice.
Kelly Clarkson on the advantage of being a winner and a judge
Clarkson, who herself has been a judge on the popular show The Voice and now also hosts her own talk show, also talked about the disdain that industry professionals initially felt for such shows, as American Idol was the first of its kind. She felt judged as “people were really cruel at first," which she wouldn't have felt was weird considering how most of these artists fill the same seats on these shows.
They didn’t like it. It took the industry kind of by storm, the talent shows. It was a very unlikable thing in the industry concerning the populous. Now there’s so many.
Just like Jennifer Hudson, who also won Idol in 2004 and went on to become a judge on The Voice in seasons 13 and 15, Kelly Clarkson told Kelce about how being a winner also gives them an advantage:
People like us who have been there in that audition process, and just being so judged instantaneously, on maybe not your best performance but you know you can do better … it’s a grueling thing. And it’s unforgiving in a lot of ways, and a lot of pressure for these artists that I don’t think a lot of artists that sell tons of records would be able to handle. It’s a different thing.
Kelly Clarkson, who won in 2002, is considered one of the biggest success stories to come out of the show. The singer went on to have three Billboard Hot 100-topping hits and three No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 so far. She also stepped into the coaching role on The Voice panel for seasons 14-21 and 23.
