In the most recent interview of hers with Rolling Stone on May 15, 2025, Lorde discussed a variety of things, among them her gender identity. In the interview that is going viral on social media, Lorde gave her nuanced opinion on gender fluidity and also championed the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

Upon being asked about her identity in the interview, she shared one of the chats she had with Chappell Roan:

"[Chappell Roan] asked me this … She was like, ‘So, are you nonbinary now? I was like, ‘I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man.’ I know that’s not a very satisfying answer, but there’s a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up."

She then went on to add:

"I don’t think that [my identity] is radical, to be honest. I see these incredibly brave young people, and it’s complicated. Making the expression privately is one thing, but I want to make very clear that I’m not trying to take any space from anyone who has more on the line than me. Because I’m, comparatively, in a very safe place as a wealthy, cis, white woman."

In the interview, Lorde opened up on several issues she has grappled with over the course of her career, from public perception, the psychedelic treatments she has been getting, and even her struggles with an eating disorder. She elaborated on her fixation with monitoring her protein and calorie intake, which led to a reduced appetite:

"I felt so hungry and so weak. I was on TV [that] morning, and I didn’t eat because I wanted my tummy to be small in the dress. It was just this sucking of a life force or something."

She also revealed that the gender identity themes will be reflected upon in her upcoming album, and asked the fans to brace themselves for maximum impact:

"There’s going to be a lot of people who don’t think I’m a good girl anymore, a good woman. It’s over. It will be over for a lot of people, and then for some people, I will have arrived. I’ll be where they always hoped I’d be."

There were many interesting points in Lorde's interview that gave fans a look into the artist's psyche and understanding of the world. By sharing her journey and music with the fans, the singer has also provided others with the encouragement to feel comfortable in their own skin. Lorde's next album Virgin is scheduled to be released on June 27, for which a couple of teasers have already been released.

After the release of her album, the singer will embark on her Ultrasound International Tour, which kicks off on September 17, 2025, at Austin’s Moody Center.
