Rachel Platten announced on August 25 that she'll be releasing an album of Rachel's Versions next month, including her signature track Fight Song.

Platten, while announcing the album on Instagram, noted that she took inspiration from Taylor Swift, who released Taylor's Version in October 2023, in which she rerecorded and owned the rights of her master recordings, following a dispute with her former label.

Netizens took to @PopCrave's repost on X to express their opinions on Platten's upcoming album, and some wondered who Platten is "reclaiming" her records from.

"it’s proof the music industry forces artists to choose profit over creativity. Props to Taylor for attention, but this is pure capitalism flex." - a user highlighted"
"Love seeing artists reclaim their work! 💪 Excited for Rachel’s version of Fight Song!" - another user said
"Couldn't she name it another thing other than Rachel's version ?" - a user questioned
"But which version will Hillary Clinton use the next time she speaks at a public event? 🤔" - another user wondered

"I'm grateful to Taylor Swift," says Rachel Platten

While announcing news of her new album, Rachel Platten mentioned in the caption that she took inspiration from Taylor Swift:

"Now, as we celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Fight Song, I've gone back to some of my originals, not to change them, but to reclaim them. This is about more than just new versions of old songs; the new Rachel's Versions are infused with the voice I have now, the wisdom I've gained, and the undeniable pride of owning my masters."

She continued,

"I’m grateful to @TaylorSwift for bringing this conversation to light and empowering artists to take back control over their work, their stories, and their futures."

Hillary Clinton's use of Rachel Platten's Fight Song explained

In early 2016, Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign adopted Rachel Platten's Fight Song as a campaign anthem. However, the song allegedly was overused and became tied to Clinton's political brand. Listeners attached the song to Clinton's rallies rather than seeing it as a motivational track.

While speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Platten mentioned that she was a little hesitant about letting Clinton use the song,

"I was a little scared at first just because I knew the song meant a lot to a lot of people - and politics, no matter how important divide us."

In September 2024, The Atlantic reported that the critics reframed the anthem as a symbol of failure rather than empowerment.
