Green Day said it themselves: their Coachella debut was “not-so-little,” and fans are still catching their breath.
On Saturday night, after tearing up the main stage with their explosive headlining set, the pop punk legends took to X (formerly Twitter) to mark the moment and hint that the party was far from over.
“Headlined @Coachella for a not-so-little show out in the desert... and we're gonna do it alllllll again next weekend too !!”
Fans quickly rallied under the tweet, with @TheScreenTeam thanking the band for their “touching” performance.
“Love to see it, and the line at the end of ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ was so touching. Thank you.”
X user @jjongariesun, on the other hand, exclaimed:
“YOU GUYS DID SO F***ING AMAZING, OMFG”
Meanwhile, netizen @jidatbesar expressed gratitude to the punk icons, saying:
“Saw it online. Thanks for speaking about Palestine. Awesome show as always.”
Green Day makes a bold political stand at Coachella 2025
Green Day roared at the Empire Polo Grounds with their impassioned 18-track set. From When I Come Around to 21 Guns and more of their greatest hits, the band — composed of Billie Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool, and Mike Dirnt, didn’t just play songs as they turned their stage into their full-blown soapbox in the middle of the desert.
During their stage, the trio performed the fan-favorite American Idiot with lyrical tweaks. Eschewing the original line, Armstrong made his stance crystal clear and yelled into the mic:
“I’m not a part of a MAGA agenda”
The political shots didn’t stop there. The Coachella headliners also made a heartfelt alteration in the lyrics of Jesus of Suburbia.
"Running away from pain like the kids from Palestine"
Green Day and Charli XCX’s fans clash over Coachella afterparty sash
Charli XCX performed ahead of Green Day on Saturday, serving looks and drenching the venue in Brat-era neon green.
At her private afterparty post-Coachella set, the 1999 artiste was spotted (and photographed) sporting a custom sash with the text that read: “Miss Should Be Headliner”. The slogan strap, Brat-coded and seemingly a playful flex for nailing her set, didn’t sit well with Green Day’s fans and punk purists.
The band’s day ones tore down Charli, with plenty of online users comparing her artistry to the Wake Me Up When September Ends hitmakers.
“An acclaimed punk rock group that’s been around for 20+ years & finally got to headline this f****ss festival, only for some lady with a mean girl mentality to think she should headline with NO acclaimed discography but 2 singles from different decades,” X.com user @swiftpropaganda wrote in a QRT.
“imagine being so far up ur own a** that u think ur more popular than green day after one mediocre edm album that was overplayed by coke addicts on tiktok… NEXT!” stated @MIDS0MM4R.
“this is so cringe like how are you so coked out all the time and have an ego this big when green day has been around for 30+ years and still somehow has more monthly listeners than you. like she’s talented but her personality seems like a garbage can,” commented @southpqrk.
“I f****ng hate how everything just became meaningless to braindead twt zombies. A legendary band headlined one of the biggest festivals in the world and talked about serious issues and all you d**b hypocrites can say is OmGg GAg thEm ChaRLi,” said @gutterplumfairy.
As of writing, the Boom Clap singer is yet to address the backlash.
