On March 29, 2025, artists from the Garden State soundtrack reunited for a one-night-only anniversary concert at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre.

The event was organised to celebrate 20 years since the indie film's release. It brought together musicians like The Shins, Iron & Wine, Frou Frou, and Remy Zero, many of whom had not performed together in years, as reports suggest.

The proceeds from the event went to The Midnight Mission, which is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization that provides shelter and support services to the homeless.

Garden State was released in 2004

The film was the directorial debut of actor Zach Braff. It featured Braff and Natalie Portman in lead roles. Billboard reports that the film grossed over $35 million and was made on a $2 million budget.

Its soundtrack was personally curated by Braff. It featured songs from artists like The Shins, Zero 7, and Coldplay. The soundtrack won a Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.

The Shins' "New Slang" gained notable acclaim from fans and enthusiasts worldwide after Natalie Portman's character insisted that the song would "change your life," reports claim.

Reunion of Frou Frou and Remy Zero at the event

The night saw performances by Frou Frou and Remy Zero, two bands that had relatively stepped away from the spotlight in recent years.

Frou Frou is the duo of Imogen Heap and Guy Sigsworth. They had disbanded after their 2002 album Details. They reunited briefly in 2017, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Their return to the stage for Garden State's anniversary was a special moment for fans who had not seen them live for a while. Heap and Sigsworth performed the song, Let Go.

On the other hand, Remy Zero is mostly known for their song Save Me, which served as the theme for the TV series Smallville. The band had broken up in 2010. For this event, they performed their 1998 track Fair, a beloved song from Garden State's soundtrack.

Notably, Coldplay and Simon & Garfunkel were not present. However, Laufey and The Milk Carton Kids performed Don't Panic and The Only Living Boy in New York, respectively. The Guardian reports that actor and director Zach Braff shared in a statement:

"I suppose that's what I was really trying to write about in my early 20s, this abyss that I felt in my chest. I couldn't see it at the time, but 20 years later I think I can. Writing this story was definitely a callout to the universe … I was looking for like-minded souls who know that sometimes it helps if you can manage to laugh through some of those tears."

Zach Braff appeared on stage as Prayer to Ganesh played, Rolling Stone reports.
