Selena Gomez has confirmed that the song Don’t Take It Personally from her latest album is, in fact, about someone she knew in the past.

The internet has reacted with shock and adulation as soon as the pop star made her revelation. Notably, one fan quipped:

“Do you have the whole narration album?”

Selena Gomez has just released a new album titled I Said I Love You First, her first since 2020. The album is collaborative with her fiance, Benny Blanco, and has 14 tracks with a feature from Gracie Abrams. The new release has done quite well with songs like Sunset Blvd, Call Me When You Break Up, and her 2019 song, I Can't Get Enough featuring J Balvin, Benny and Tainy, and so on. However, the one song that has everybody talking is Don’t Take It Personally.

The song has stirred up the internet, causing people to come up with theories on what the song is about, even a few controversial ones. The premise of the song portrays Selena being jealous as she and another woman have feelings for the same man. The lyrics go:

Please don’t take it personally / Some things are just meant to be / Don’t waste all your energy / We both know that he loves me

She further sings:

Oh honey, you deserve it / I know you’re gonna find somebody perfect / Please don’t take it personally / Some things are just meant to be

Some fans have speculated that the song targets Hailey Bieber, wife of the singer's long-time ex, Justin Bieber. Selena and Justin allegedly had quite a messy on-and-off relationship that spanned over a decade. Others thought the song represented someone from Benny's past who came forward and said those things to her.

Curbing the curiosity of her fans, Selenators, the Good for you singer came forward to share a voice recording of what the song is actually about, though without confirming or denying the rumours or mention who exactly it is.

In the voice recording, Selena says:

"So this Song is another song that actually we kind of put together in a way where it was actually told to me so this is actually me in experience of someone maybe in my past, you know, had you gone through whatever they need to go through to get through life, and this is odd to say, but yes, I am the person that it happened to."

Essentially, the actress states that the words in the song refer to somebody talking to her and not her talking about someone else.

Fan reactions to Selena's explanation

Though Selenators were confused before, they understood where the singer was coming from and expressed their understanding.

"Makes sense. I always thought the song was lowkey kind of messed up. We know Selena can be messy sometimes, but this kinda went into homewrecking territory which is far beyond that, so the fact that it was actually about another woman that said it to her makes a lot more sense," a fan said.

Another expressed:

"I knew it. These words were said to her! Same with how does it feel to be forgotten."
"i thought this song was about benny's ex, but this makes so much more sense!!!" a Selenator said.
