Green Day's frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, changed lyrics in both, American Idiot and Jesus of Suburbia, to target Donald Trump's MAGA movement and to reference Palestinian children amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in their Coachella 2025 set.
During the opening of their set, Amstrong changed the original lyric, "I'm not a part of a redneck agenda," in American Idiot to "I'm not part of the MAGA agenda."
In another significant lyric change, Armstrong instead of singing "Runnin' away from pain when you've been victimised" in Jesus of Suburbia sang:
"Runnin' away from pain like the kids from Palestine/Tales from another broken home."
Both the lyric changes prompted loud cheers and applause from the audience. This is not the first time Billy has used music to express his stance. The frontback singer earlier in Australia changed the same song to target US Vice President JD Vance, where instead of singing, "Am I re*****d, or am i just overjoyed?," he sang, "Am I re*****d, or am I just JD Vance?"
Disturbed's David Draiman responds to Green Day's Coachella lyric change
Disturbed's singer, David Draiman, took to social media to respond to Billy Joe Armstrong and Green Day's lyric change at their Coachella debut, and offered to allow them to hear Israel's side in the Israel-Hamas war:
"Open offer to @BillyJoeArmstrong from @GreenDay. You know I respect you brother. I'd love to have the opportunity for you to hear the Israeli/Jewish side of this horrific war. I'm available to discuss whenever you are. No judgement, nothing preconceived. Let me know."
Draiman has been very vocal about his support for Israel since Hamas militants launched an attack.
Billy Joel Armstrong and Green Day's debut at Coachella isn't the first time the band has shown support for Palestine. In their song, Peacemaker, from the album, 21st Century Breakdown, the lyrics note:
"Well, call up the Gaza, hey, hey...Well, death to the ones at the end of the serenade."
In November 2024, during a performance at the Corona Capital festival in Mexico, Armstrong instead of singing, "Anaheim to Middle East," sang "From Palestine to the Middle East."
In another February 2025 concert in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Armstrong accepted a Palestinian flag from a fan in the audience and draped it around his shoulder for the remainder of the song.
The band has been vocal about their support for Palestine and has also showcased Palestinian flags in other concerts during their world tour.
