The internet is abuzz as Spotify finally rolls out lossless audio for premium users, after years of users asking for it.

Spotify has finally delivered what they have been promising for years: lossless audio. Rumors about the features have been swirling since 2017, making the wait almost 8 years long. The music streaming app also claimed in May of 2024 that it was "almost ready." But now the feature is finally here.

"Lossless audio" basically means that the digital audio would essentially sound the same as the source, as it preserves all of the original sound data. The app's lossless audio feature will allow users to stream tracks encoded in up to 24-bit depth at a sample rate of 44.1 kHz via FLAC (free lossless audio codec). But this feature isn't exactly new, as the app's competitors have been doing this for years, with Apple Music introducing it in May 2021, while Amazon Music did so in 2019.

Gustav Gyllenhammar, Spotify’s VP of subscriptions, said in a statement, "The wait is finally over. We’ve taken time to build this feature in a way that prioritizes quality, ease of use, and clarity at every step, so you always know what’s happening under the hood. With Lossless, our premium users will now have an even better listening experience.”

Internet reacts to Spotify's lossless audio update

The internet does not have a single stance on the introduction of this new feature. While some complained about the delay, and others questioned the need for this feature to even be introduced, a vast majority don't quite understand what lossless audio even means.

One user stated,

"Four years of waiting for lossless audio, and Spotify finally delivers... at no extra cost? More like they should've done it from the start instead of teasing us with 'HiFi' promises. Now they're just playing catch-up with Apple Music and Tidal. Bluetooth still isn't supported, so what's the point of lossless if I have to use wired headphones? Guess Spotify's still got some kinks to work out... They need to step up their game...."

Another happily expressed,

"finally can hear all the filth in my phonk tracks the way they were meant to be heard... time to make some beats so dirty spotify might have to censor them"

While one mentioned,

"Damn, their so behind the competition"

One user was just as confused as the masses,

"what is lossless audio quality, how does it work, where is it applied, what’s the different"

While another questioned,

"How much better do we really need the music to sound. It'’s like TVs do I really need it to look like I’m staying in the damn room with them."

According to the company, subscribers in the U.S., along with those in Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, and the U.K., have already started to get access to the feature.
