Two of pop music's iconic figures have finally reconciled after more than two decades of public jabs and notable silence. Elton John and Madonna were arguably known just as much for their chart-topping tracks as their tension-filled relationship. Now Madonna announces that they have officially "buried the hatchet."
Moreover, they have seemingly hinted at a potential musical collaboration. Reports suggest that the reconciliation was done backstage at Saturday Night Live (SNL) this past weekend. In the show, Elton John performed as the musical guest alongside Brandi Carlile.
Madonna made an Instagram post on Monday, April 7, 2025, revealing their reunion. The post was captioned:
"We Finally Buried the Hatchet!!! I went to see @eltonjohn perform on SNL this weekend!! WOW. I remembered when I was in high school- I snuck out of the house one night to see Elton perform live in Detroit! It was an unforgettable performance that helped me understand the transformative power of music."
It continues:
"Seeing him perform when I was in high school changed the course of my life. I had always felt like an outsider growing up and watching him on stage helped me to understand that it was OK to be different-to stand out- to take the road, less traveled by. In fact, it was essential."
"Over the decades it hurt me to know that someone I admired so much shared his dislike of me publicly as an artist. I didn’t understand it. I was told Elton John was the musical guest on SNL and I decided to go. I needed to go backstage and confront him . When I met him, the first thing out of his mouth was, “Forgive Me” and the wall between us fell down."
"Forgiveness is a powerful tool. Within minutes. We were hugging. Then he told me had written a song for me and he wanted to collaborate. It was like everything came full circle!! And you can tell everybody , This is Your Song……….💙🩵🩶🤍"
GCN reports that Elton John responded to Madonna's long Instagram post, stating:
"Thank you for coming to see me at SNL, and thank you for forgiving me and my big mouth. I am not proud of what I said, particularly when I think about all the ground-breaking work you have done as an artist – paving the way for an entire generation of female artists to succeed and be true to themselves."
Fans react to Elton John and Madonna's ending their feud
Netizens were quick to comment their thoughts and reactions over the relatively surprising moment between two beloved artists. Below are what some of them had to share on X (formerly Twitter):
"Make a song together. That’s true forgiveness", declared a fan.
"Pre-historic stan war", joked another.
"This generation don’t know about this pop beef", stated a third.
"He was dragging her for decades and she still took the high road. That's real power", opined a fourth.
"Public reconciliation feels a bit PR-flavored, but I’ll take peace over pettiness. I had no idea they even had drama. What happened between them?", commented a fifth.
The two's feud dates back to the early 2000s. Reports suggest that it was one of the most talked-about in the pop culture scene.
It began in 2002 when John criticized Madonna's James Bond theme song Die Another Day, calling it "the worst Bond tune ever." In 2004, at the Q Awards, Elton John noted her nomination for Best Live Act by saying,
"Madonna, best live act? F*** off."
Moreover, he accused her of lip-syncing. In 2012, during an Australian TV interview, he reportedly described Madonna as looking like a "fairground stripper" and said her career was “over.”
