Katy Perry made history on April 14, 2025, at 09:30 a.m. ET as the first pop star to travel to space. The singer traveled alongside Lauren Sánchez, Gayle King, Amanda Nguyen, Kerianne Flynn, and Aisha Bowe. The flight to space was on the Blue Origin's NS-31 mission, which lasted all of 11 minutes.
The mission was broadcasted live on CBS from 07:00 a.m. ET. There was also a Paramount+ livestream of the event. The flight only went up to the edge of space before climbing back down for landing.
The singer talked about the journey before liftoff in a video post on her Instagram on April 14, 2025, stating:
"T-Minus One day, before I get to go to space. I think if you know me, you know that I'm always looking for little confirmations from the heavens, from my guides, from my angels, from my higher self, you know when I ask for it, and I'm open to it, its pretty loud. So when I was invited to come on this voyage, -"
The singer continued:
"-I looked up the capsule, and the capsule, on the very front it is the outline in the shape of a feather and when I saw that it was like a total confirmation, because my mom has always called me feather and so I'm in space training today and its you know, there's a lot to digest, we're almost finished with the day and they show us the capsule-"
Katy Perry added:
"-and we run simulations in another capsule, and tested the noise, and what to expect, and all these different things, and they reveal the capsule name, and the capsule's name is Tortoise. A wave, just the most energetic wave just shot through my body, and I was like what? this capsule's name is Tortoise. My mom calls me two nick names, Feather and Tortoise."
Katy Perry continued:
"What are the chances that I'm going to space, on a rocket, in a capsule with my symbol the feather called Tortoise and my mom calls me tortoise... there are no coincidences and I'm just so grateful for these confirmations and so grateful that I feel like something bigger than me is steering the ship."
Katy Perry's Blue Origin flight is the first solo flight for women since 1963
Blue Origin NS-31 is the first solo mission by women since 1963's solo flight by Soviet engineer and cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova. All other space flights in between have featured a mix of male and female astronauts.
Katy Perry sang What A Wonderful World during the flight before landing back safely on the ground. The singer was spotted kissing the ground after disembarking from the craft. The flight was the 11th human spaceflight of the Blue Origin rocket, with the NS-31 designation indicating the total number of flights by the module, including nonhuman flights.
The module used by Blue Origin has previously been under scrutiny, with former Blue Origin employees stating that the craft was not safe to fly in an open letter back in 2021. The letter was signed by Alexandra Abrams, alongside others.
Katy Perry will return from space and then embark on her world tour on April 23, 2025, which is set to continue till December 7, 2025. The tour will be in support of her new album, 143, released in 2024.
