Fyre Festival 2 is officially locked out of Mexico. What was heralded as an upscale re-do of the disastrous 2017 event is now shrouded in secrecy once more, with officials in Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen stating that no permits were ever issued — or requested. Organizers counter that they're actively searching for a new overseas site.

The 2017 festival's sequel is reported to occur at Isla Mujeres between May 30 - June 2, 2025. Local authorities, however, argue that they were surprised by the announcement and have not seen any official documentation from organizers.

This change, coupled with vague marketing materials and the absence of a fixed location, has some asking whether or not Fyre Festival 2 is fated to follow in the original's footsteps of notoriety.

Two cities, two rejections

According to People, Isla Mujeres municipality issued a public declaration on February 26, 2025, denying any association with Fyre Festival 2. They denied any request or issuance of permits for the event. The General Directorate of Tourism and Edgar Gasca, Director of Economic Development and Tourism, declared that,

"We have no knowledge of this event, nor contact with any person or company about it. For us, this is an event that does not exist."

Unsubstantiated claims of earlier support

During the backlash, one of the Fyre Festival 2 producers claimed local officials had previously expressed interest or support for the festival on social media platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter).

However, these claims remain unverified, and no supporting official statements or posts have been made. Without independent verification, the alleged endorsements must be met with a grain of salt.

This confusion is only one more added to the festival's history of ambiguous logistics and misleading advertising — a hallmark of the original fiasco in 2017.

A venue that never was

Marketing materials strongly preferred Playa del Carmen as the location, with palm trees, white beaches, and experiential entertainment. There was never an official location announced, though, and officials now say they did not know an event was going to take place in the area.

Despite this, tickets were being sold — some for nearly $800 — before a single verified fact had been released. With neither Isla Mujeres nor Playa del Carmen stepping forward as host, the location remains a mystery.

Organizers shift gears — again

According to Travelnoire and Nbclosangeles, after being rejected for permits in Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen, Billy McFarland has shifted gears with a new scheme: Fyre Festival 2 will now reportedly occur on a Mexican Caribbean private island, April 25–28, 2025.

Details are being provided by an unknown production company, McFarland says, with the event set to provide a "luxury experience" instead of the one that flopped in 2017.

Though officials of two mainland destinations have already categorically ruled out involvement, McFarland guarantees that this island destination is solid and separate from past permitting headaches. However, no entertainers have yet been named and specifics regarding infrastructures and accommodation are sketchy.

Tickets are now on sale — priced from $500 to an eye-watering $1.1 million — with perks including private yacht accommodations, bespoke adventures, and scuba diving.

Fyre Festival 2 is still surrounded by mystery, even after a new date and venue were announced. After denials of permits by Isla Mujeres in February 2025 and Playa del Carmen in April, organizers have made the change to hold the event on a private island in the Mexican Caribbean between April 25 and 28, 2025.

Promotional materials are touting luxury amenities and tickets are already being sold, yet essential details—including a locked-down lineup and clear logistical planning—remain absent.

Public doubt still reigns supreme, driven by the reputation of the catastrophic original 2017 festival and fears of a lack of transparency. With the countdown to April 2025 ticking away, everyone waits with bated breath to see whether Fyre Festival 2 will live up to its previous reputation or learn from the past.
