OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently appealed to the ChatGPT users who were taking to the platform to generate Ghibli-style portayals, to relax and "chill". This reaction led to a storm of online news and reports, making the already buzzing OpenAI-Ghibli back-and-forth resurface. He also requested the users to consider that the OpenAI team 'needs sleep'.
It all began with a trend. Netizens decided to reimagine their selfies and pictures in Studio Ghibli style. Netizens did not only stop at that but took to social media to share the results.
The generated portraits heated debates across social media platforms and made many express their views on whether the use of AI is justified to produce art styles in the blink of an eye. The buzz went so far that an old video from 2016 featuring Hayao Miyazaki's opinion on AI-generated art resurfaced overnight.
For those who might not be a fan of animes, Hayao Miyazaki is the co-founder and mastermind behind some of the iconic animes of the decade. (like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke).
We have seen the futuristic cyberpunk art style of Ghost in the Shell, digital, stylized 2-D animation of Makoto Shinkai (like in 'Your Name') and the hand-drawn cel animation style of Dragon Ball Z. But what makes Miayazaki popular is the mesmerizing hand-painted backgrounds, frame-by-frame animated movements and an art style that immortalized itself in the golden books of anime.
When the trend went viral, fans were raining requests on the platform, requesting thousands of results from all over the world. Imagine this: You take your tired morning selfie and turn it into an aesthetic photo. The possibility of instantly creating Ghibli-styled results is what captivated many. The requests were so many that OpenAI crashed at some point, resulting in downtime.
More on Ghibli-OpenAI buzz:
This buzz has clearly fiburcated opinions; while some sided with the users who used AI tools to generate Miyazaki-styled pictures, others strictly voiced their concerns over it. A section of Miyazaki fans strongly advocated for preserving the artistic vision and opined against the use of any artificial intelligence tool in the name of creativity.
Watching the scenario get worse with ChatGPT downtime, Sam Altman chose to step in, requesting users to take it easy on the Ghibli-styled image prompts. He opined that an 'insane' amount of ChatGPT summons were dropped at the platform, leading the same to be overwhelmed.
Later on, he took to social media with another comment,
we just haven’t been able to catch up since launch so people are still working to keep the service up
biblical demand, i have never seen anything like it
Altaman's X bio also says, 'AI is cool I guess. ' The key takeaway from all this? Ghibli-Open AI buzz does not seem to stop anytime soon.
