On Monday, shortly after the Indiana native disappeared, the military facility issued a plea for help in locating the soldier, assigned to the 5th Engineer Battalion. In a Facebook post, the army said Roque, who served as a bridge crewmember and a Mine Dog Handler with the K9 Detachment, was last seen in the vicinity of the military base. Concerns were raised after Roque’s chain of command and her family were unable to contact her. The post read:

“Roque’s last known whereabouts were in the vicinity of Fort Leonard Wood, according to Fort Leonard Wood’s Directorate of Emergency Services. Her chain of command and her family have been unable to contact her.”

A day later, Major General Christopher Beck announced Sarah Roque was found dead. In a Facebook post, Beck revealed Roque enlisted in 2020 and attended Basic Combat Training at the military facility. Roque was described as a decorated soldier who won several accolades during her time in the army, including the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.

Beck said the circumstances surrounding her death are currently under investigation. Further details, including the manner of death, were undisclosed. Beck stated Roque’s passing has left a void in the army base. He noted:

“Sergeant Roque was a daughter, sister, friend and Soldier who chose to serve our country bravely and honorably. Her passing has caused a tremendous void throughout our team, and while there are no words to ease the pain, we continue to provide care, resources and support to those who are affected during this difficult time.”

In a Facebook post, a friend paid tribute to Roque and revealed they attended middle and high school together.
